In The Communist Manifesto, Marx and Engels write about the conflict between two classes, the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. The bourgeoisie are the people who own the means of production. They own factories, land, and they even own people as commodities. The proletariat are the workers, the people who work under the people who own the means of production. What Marx and Engels are trying to convey in the first passage is that industrialization has created a much larger prison for the working class. Before the proletariat’s, there were serfs who worked for the aristocrats in a more small and controlled space. After the end of feudalism, the bourgeoisie and proletariat were created. The proletariat’s now worked under capitalism. However, there wasn’t just an upper and lower class, there were people in the middle, as he mentions “As privates of the industrial armies they are placed under the command of a perfect hierarchy of officers and sergeants”. There is a whole hierarchy from the bourgeoisie all the way to the proletariat. Then Its fall and the victory of the proletariat are equally inevitable” what Marx and Engels mean is that the bourgeoisie have no choice but to create their own grave-diggers, which are the proletariats. They are not trying to be greedy, per say, they are making more profits to stay afloat, to take care of their families. However, the proletariats are trying to take care of their families and stay afloat as well, the difference is that they are being exploited and this creates angry people who will overthrow the bourgeoisie. All of this is inevitable because the capitalist system becomes more and more ruthless because of this, here is going to eventually be a lot of people who are on the bottom, that they are going to be hard to control.
