Couples getting married at a young age used to be a widely accepted, and even preferred, choice in the marriage process. Now however, it is a choice that could be potentially destructive to the relationship in the long run. 90 percent of couples marry by the age of 50 in the United States. Although marriage can be a wonderful blessing, 40 to 50 percent of couples in the United States end up divorcing (“Marriage and Divorce”). It is for this reason that I believe that the process of getting married should be held at a higher standard, and therefore have a longer, more substantial process.
In Raleigh, North Carolina, if you were to try and get married right now at the legal age of 18, it would not be a hard process. You would first obtain a marriage license. To obtain a marriage license both the bride and the groom would have to complete a marriage application form, present identification that shows they are authorized to be married in this state, bring their social security card, and pay a fee of 60 dollars, cash only. An oath will be administered to each and every applicant, stating that the information is correct and so on and so forth. The license, once administered, is effective immediately for the next 60 days. The marriage itself must be performed by one of the authorized officials listed by the state and witnessed by two persons present at the ceremony. And obviously this is no easy job either, so it is one that would require certain qualifications, meaning that a certain pay grade would be in order, and therefore more Americans would want this type of job. Social workers are often a blessing in disguise and though their work isn’t always appreciated in the moment, in the long run their work can have a big impact on the future of those being worked with.
Marriage is something that should be considered sacred and should be viewed in a higher manner. It is unfortunate that so many people have the idea of marriage turned around in such a way that almost mocks it. If we were to bring social workers into the mix, it could revolutionize the process of marriage and bring down divorce rates for the foreseeable future.

However, many religious fundamentalists are against this and believe gay marriage is wrong and needs to be stopped....   [tags: Same-sex marriage, Homosexuality, Marriage, Law]
