February 4th, 2004 was the day social media would change forever; it was the day Facebook was launched. Mark Zuckerberg and his college roommates from Harvard are the founders of the popular social media site. Zuckerberg is now in the top 100 people on the Forbes list because of his success with Facebook. He is currently listed as number 20 of the richest people in America. Facebook has lead Zuckerberg to his wealth and his success.
Mark Elliot Zuckerberg was born May 14th, 1984, in White Plains, New York. He was raised in the nearby village of Dobbs Ferry. His family was very well educated. His father, Edward, was a dentist and his mother, Karen, was a psychiatrist. Together they raised four children including Mark (Mark Zuckerberg Biography).
As a young child, Zuckerberg had an interest in computers. His interest sparked an invention! When he was 12 years old, he invented a messaging program called the “Zucknet” out of an Atari Basic. He also created computer games to have fun with his friends. To keep up with his interest, his parents hired a private computer tutor that would come to the house once a week (Mark Zuckerberg Biography).
After Zuckerberg graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 2002, he decided to attend Harvard University to study computer science. By his sophomore year, he developed a reputation as the software developer. He built two programs, CourseMatch, which would help students choose their classes, and FaceMash, which would compare pictures of students and users would vote on the more attractive person. The movie “Social Network” is about the ideas and the development behind the creation of the very popular social networking site “Facebook”. Mark Zuckerberg is the main character in the movie and also the actual creator of Facebook.
In 2010 the Academy Awards gave its best picture award to a film called The King’s Speech directed by Tom Hooper and written by David Seidler. It was a well written and executed film however there was another film that should have won instead of The King’s Speech. That film was called The Social Network directed by the revered David Fincher and written by Aaron Sorkin. The film starred Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, and Justin Timberlake. It was adapted from a book called “The Accidental Billionaires” written by Ben Mezrich in 2009. The Social Network focuses on the foundation of the social network website Facebook. The film’s main story begins with Mark Zuckerberg being dumped by his girlfriend which starts a chain of events leading to a website that rates girls. The website’s popularity results in the crashing of the Harvard network and gets Mark noticed by the Winkle Voss twins. The twins recruit Mark to create a website called the Harvard Connection. Little did they know the twins planted a seed, Mark secretly began bringing the idea of Facebook to life. Mark got the funding for the website from his best friend Eduardo Saverin, the co-founder of Facebook. Both began working on the site and expanded it to include other universities. After the initial success of the website, Mark and Eduardo decided to look for other investor where they meet the Napster co-founder Sean Parker. Later in the movie, a bombshell is dropped on Eduardo; his share of the company is dropped from 34% to .03%. Zuckerburg’s parents are a dentist named Edward Zuckerburg and a psychiatrist named Karen Kempner. He also has a sister named Randi Jayne Zuckerburg. In middle school Mark started to use computers and had a tutor to help him learn more about computers and software. Zuckerburg went to Ardsley High School, then in his Junior year, transferred to Phillips Exeter Acadamy, a more advanced high school. During high School he took a graduate course at Mercy College near his hometown. Then he went to Harvard University after high school. Zuckerburg made lots of computer games and other small social media sites for Harvard Students. In his Sophomore year, he dropped out of Harvard to pursue his dream in the site that made him famous, Facebook.
There are over 1.7 billion monthly active users on Facebook, each with stories and ideas to share with all of their friends and the rest of the world. The site has successfully brought over 20% of the entire world population together on a single, massively complex, incredibly popular, socially driven hub of data. Though everyone and their mother knows what Facebook is, the story of its creation, and the struggle for its rights and ownership, is a story far less known. The film The Social Network is that story (with a little bit of Hollywood sprinkled in). The Social Network is not only my favorite movie of all time, but it is also the reason I am at Dakota State University.
