November 10, 1775, is revered as being the Marine Corps birthday, and its birthplace being at Tun Tavern, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Continental Congress met at Tun Tavern, to establish two battalions of Continental Marines, under the command of Cpt. Samuel Nicholas, as an amphibious fighting force who would later in March of 1776, participate in their first foreign raid, in the Bahamas (www.globalsecurity.org ). After the Treaty of Paris was signed, and the American Revolution came to an end, the Continental Marines disbanded, and were re-established on July 11, 1798, as the United States Marine Corps. One of the most famous deployments that the USMC has been a part of, were the operations against the Barbary pirates, along the “Shores of Tripoli”, which is stated in the Marine Corps Hymn. “During the Mexican War, Marines seized enemy seaports on both the Gulf and Pacific coasts. While landing parties of Marines and Sailors were seizing enemy ports, a battalion of Marines joined General Winfield Scott’s army at Pueblo and marched and fought all the way to the "Halls of Montezuma," which would later become the first line of the Marine Corps Hymn. Marines didn’t have a large role in the Civil War, but their major battles were fought alongside the Navy, in situation involving blockades, at sea. But, even then, most of the fighting of the Civil War was fought on land deep, remotely from the coast. Probably the first heavy deployment of Marines was in WWI, where the USMC made itself known by the European forces fighting mainly in France. The Marine Corps is the smallest out of all other branches, with a total of 250,000. If anybody is looking at the Marine Corps as a chance to gain benefits, or a free education, he’s looking at the wrong branch of service. All branches of service have the same benefits, but the Marine Corps focuses more on the benefits of honor and quality citizenship you gain from being in the Marine Corps, whether being 4 years, or 20 years. Any other recruit training, from the start, is going to call you by the title of either soldier, sailor, or airmen, but if you have what it takes to complete the toughest basic training the Department of Defense has to offer, to can proudly claim the title of United States Marine
