The Adventures of Marco Polo Marco... Polo… or Marco Polo? Is it just a game or an important figure in world history? The world has evolved from famous explorers such as the famous Marco Polo. All starting with the birth of a curious and adventurous boy on September 15, 1254 in Venice, Italy (Alchin). Marco Polo was a merchant who went on an adventure on the Silk Road, discovering information about the unknown which created others to explore, shaping our history. Marco Polo’s discoveries gave other people the insight of the Far East (Funk & Wagnalls L.P. 142-143). Polo studied the life of the Chinese people and wrote the animals, words, and interesting facts down in a book, although he mistook some of the animals as mythical creatures (Marco Polo Biography). Kublai Khan assigned Polo as an envoy and sent on a mission. His mission was to travel across China to many different parts of the empires and then return reporting what he saw to Khan (Marco Polo Timeline). Polo achieved his mission and did so excellently that he was promoted to work for Khan. Polo even became ruler of a Chinese city for three years (Funk & Wagnalls L.P. 142-143). Khan made a deal with explaining that the only way they could leave was if they escorted the princess to Persia by sea where she would marry a prince. Polos took up the offer and an attended the wedding and then in 1295, they traveled to the Black Sea with the wedding party (Alchin). On the return home, they were robbed and most of their gold coins were stolen, but they had put some of their gems in the stitching of their coats and that's all they have left (Funk & Wagnalls L.P. 142-143). During the trip home, arriving in half the time it took the Polo’s to get to China, they lost around 600 passengers on their ships. When they were home Polo arrived with the best set of coins that anybody in their hometown had ever seen. The Polo’s found their community at war (Marco Polo Timeline). Polo not only joined the army, but was nominated the gentlemen commander and then got put in jail as a hostage for the Genoas (Alchin). Spending a whole year in jail gave Marco time to think. During this time he explained his adventure of China, Japan, and other Eastern countries to a French writer, Rustichello of Pisa, who wrote all this information down
