Mandatory Mental Illness and Developmental Disorder Class in a High School Curriculum
A college student goes through the same daily routine. Wake up, go to class, work on homework, go to work, and finally go to sleep. As she continues to do this repetitively, she finds no reward in these activities. School no longer matters to her and her grades begin to drop. She quits her job, and begins to withdraw from her friends. She sleeps most of the time, and she doesn’t know why she feels this way, but she has lost her motivation. What happened to her? More likely than not, she became depressed. Depression is a mood disorder that can be defined as a constant feeling of sadness, or a complete loss of interest in activities. Depression and anxiety are the two most common mental illnesses in the United States today, yet many people do not know exactly what these illnesses entail. Also prevalent in the United States are developmental disorders, which are separate from mental illness. The two most common developmental disorders in the Unites States include: autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD.
While discussing mental illness and developmental disorders, these things first need to be defined. “A mental illness is a condition that impacts a person 's thinking, feeling or mood and may affect his or her ability to relate to others and function on a daily basis. Randy and Michelle agreed that this class may increase job demands among professionals and provide them with more work. It would also make their job more challenging and provide them with more patients. The third question presented was do you think having this class separate from a psychology class is important? Kenna said yes, it would be important because in psychology the most common mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression are glossed over in order to discuss very serious and rare diseases.
