The duty of management is very important to improve and sustain effective workplace health and safety management systems. This can be done by following these precautions:
- making sure that the identified hazards has been controlled
- following procedures of health and safety
- working together with the employees to find the best ways to develop health and safety
- health and safety discussions
Hazard identification
Hazard identification and assessment is at the foundation of a quality occupational health and safety management system.
- assess a work site and identify the potential hazards
- Arrange a written hazard assessment include the methods used to control or eliminate the hazards.
- share the workers in the hazard assessment
- Ensure that all workers are familiar about the potential hazards and the control measures.
Hazards Control:
Hazards should be completely eliminated whenever it is possible. If this is not possible, they must be controlled. Control the hazards should reduce the hazard to a level that does not present a major risk to the safety of worker. Controls should be as the following:
Elimination: Elimination is the best method of control because it removes the hazard entirely.
Engineering Controls: containing substitution of the hazard, isolation of hazard, guards and ventilation.
Administrative Controls: containing warning signs, safe work procedures and MSDS.
PPE: footwear, gloves, respiratory protection and coverall.
There are many other methods and tools that can be used and depend of what is the best method to control the hazards.

This forced the owners to pay more attention to health and safety through the application of strict laws like HSE policy and SMS. Implementing health and safety policy commits authorities to consider the health and safety of employees, passengers, service partners, contractors and public people. It aims to minimize harm to persons and property by adopting a positive approach to effective risk and safety management. SMS is also applied to take into consider the effects of all operations on the environment and the community. Responsibilities and duties for compliance with HSE standards and regulations at each level throughout the organization will be identified by the HSE policy and SMS.
