Did you ever know that you’re my hero and everything I’d like to be? Whenever I fondly remember my hero, the man who has inspired me the most, I hear these words from Bette Midler’s song, “Wind Beneath My Wings”. My grandfather, Don Skipper Sr. has taught me to believe in myself, follow Jesus, and pursue my dreams. This man has not only been a role model for me, but for my father as well. My grandfather was a hard worker, not a fan, but a servant follower and believer of Jesus the Christ. When he was 18 years old he started working at The Street and Sanitation Department for the city of Homewood in Alabama as a foreman. Over the years he worked his way up to supervisor. He loved his job and his employees. There are so many things he taught …show more content…
Granddaddy always received compliments for his appearance; his shoes would enhance his apparel. He would visit the barber weekly, he would say the way a gentleman carries himself speaks volumes about him. If you want to know something about the neatness of a man you should observe his hands, shoes, and clothing. “One should dress appropriately for all occasions”, he would say. If you are going to work dress according to the job you do and the position you are aspiring. During leisure times he would dress “sharp as a tack”. I would tell him, “My granddaddy looks good”, he would smile at me and tell me how beautiful I was. When he would share conversations with me, I felt so much love. I was truly in awe with my …show more content…
As I anxiously walked across that stage to receive my high school diploma being his first grandchild to earn one, I reminisced on the life of my grandfather, Don Skipper, Sr. I envisioned him looking down smiling on me. I felt honor and prestige, to be the first Skipper grandchild to fulfill his wish for his grand kids. He would tell me,” he has two sons who earned high school diplomas, bachelor’s degrees, and masters’; but not a grandchild, so make me proud.” I realize he was speaking life and destiny into me. I have two younger siblings and a cousin, so it is my responsibility to carry this torch, be a role model for them and persevere hardships, even when I don’t think I can because, my grandfather says I can! Therefore, I will! If my grandfather was here today I would tell him in the words of Bette Midler: “It might have appeared to go unnoticed, but I 've got it all here in my heart. I want you to know I know the truth, of course I know it. I would be nothing without you. Did you ever know that you 're my
What National Monument Means the Most to Me? The National Monument that means the most to me is Abraham Lincoln Memorial. Abraham Lincoln born on February 12th, 1809 in a small Kentucky cabin. His family was poor and could only provide limited material needs, yet Lincoln was still able to learn and grow as a person. His Memorial was built to remember him and everything he accomplished. In 1816, Lincoln and his family moved to Indiana where slavery was not allowed. He was now able to learn why
“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy” (Dr. King). Martin Luther King was one of the greatest civil rights activist of his time: he didn’t believe in violence as solving the issue of equal rights he believed the issue could have been resolved with peace and tranquility. Dr. King believed equal rights is something worth fighting for and eventually the nation believed it was worth fighting
"All that I am or hope to be I owe to my angel mother," said Abraham Lincoln. In life, everyone is given a mother, but not everyone has a loving, supportive mom. It is also not the the law to be a good mom. Not everyone can be a mom, it takes a special unselfish person to become a mother. Some people aren't lucky and they have really haven't experienced what a mother is. People could not survive if we didn't have something to inspire them to be better people. They strive to be better just like a
In 1963, a great man delivered a monumental speech, which would be recorded in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of the United States of America. The man was Martin Luther King Jr. The speech was titled I have a dream. This speech was given on August 28, 1963, in Washington D.C., during the March on Washington. Overall this speech was immaculate. It was free of error and free of any logical fallacies. It was a well-rounded and extremely inspiring speech, which
Owing to one of the most specific, the illumination theory in the inspiration of doctrine is what created the content of Scripture. It indicates the divine activity bringing scripture to the real life (Erickson, 2001). Generally, illumination of inspiration shows us the role of God in the overall life process. Moreover, the idea of inspiration stresses on the place where everyone stands in adherence to the Holy Spirit. Nowadays, Biblical illumination has become one of the most disputable topics
The Man Who Changed Life as We Know It Can you stop a country without going to war with them? Gandhi did just that with the British Empire pushing India around. India did not gain their independence like normal countries with force they did it with peaceful protest and Gandhi was a big reason how they did it. Mohandas K. Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, at Porbandar on the Kathiawar peninsula of India. Gandhi got married at the age of 13 by a set up wedding by both their parents and they had 4
Leonardo Da Vinci was a man of many talents. He’s definitely inspired me in art, music, and literature. Art is the imitation of nature. It’s expressing the way you feel through music, literature or art itself. Art is important to our daily lives because it defines our creativity, creates joy, a sense of calmness, and can be inspirational. Although Da Vinci created his work dating back to 1473, his work still lives on today impacting many lives through art, music and literature. He will
Prejudice towards others who have different heritages and beliefs have led to many people performing heroic actions upon human rights for equality. The German Nazis have murdered over six million Jews and five million non-Jews during the Holocaust between the years of 1943 and 1945. Due to the gruesome Holocaust and the Nazis’ alarmingly violent, unsettling, and questionable behaviors have provoked three individuals who have displayed tremendous heroism upon man-kind. The first individual, Elie Wiesel
a story about, Jefferson, a black man who is wrongfully charged with a crime he did not commit. He cannot get a fair trial because he is a black man in the south. He is sentenced to be executed, but before he dies Grant, an educated black man, teaches him how to walk like a man, so people do not think of him as a hog. "Beowulf" is an epic poem over one thousand years old, which was told from one generation to another. It is about, Beowulf, a great hero who defeats three different monsters to
The person who I think is heroic, would be my dad. He is the one who has been there since day one. If I needed anything he will drop what he is doing and come help me. He teaches me lessons that help me in my life. If it wasn’t for my dad I wouldn’t be who I am today. I have learned responsibility and the value of a dollar. My dad would give me the shirt off his back or his last dollar. A hero is someone who takes chances or sacrifices something of someone they cherish dearly. My dad would risk
ideas of post-modernism and minimalism. He has been making art since the early 1960’s and has moved through many different mediums as his art progressed and his style changed. At first Nauman was a painter who soon ended that career and turned to sculpting, photography, film, and video. Bruce Nauman’s works of art have interested me and inspired my final assignment by his professional legacy, inspirations, and techniques. Although Nauman is now one of the most talked about artists in today’s world,
a young man called Santiago Munez. The movie made with full co-operation from FIFA, which is one of the reasons why actual teams and players are used throughout the film. Santiago Munez, played by Kuno Becker, is a very talented footballer playing for his local team in the barrio section of Los Angeles. While playing in very low standard league, he performs great skills, outstanding goals and perfect passing. For this reason he is spotted by an ex Newcastle United player, Glen Foy, who gets him
universe is not meaningless and that it has a purpose as do humans. This is explained in the bible and all sacred literature. Often people ask 'is the bible reliable' and 'was it just made up'. Many Christians believe that the bible is the direct word of God and believe every word of the bible. However, to me this seems hard to accept, since the bible is made up of 66 books and was written over a period of 3000 years by many different authors who believed that God communicated with them

used to explain our world, our lives, and most importantly, our interpersonal relationships. Still today Greek mythology is infused into the literature of almost every influential and lasting author, one of the more effective authors being Edith Wharton, author of The Age of Innocence. The relationship between Newland Archer and Madame Ellen Olenska, two protagonists in Wharton’s novel, is an example of the classic relationship between a muse and an inspired man. Wharton was obviously well learned in
