Malcolm X has developed very strong opinions throughout his life, and many people question how he developed these opinions. In The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Alex Haley, the way Malcolm X formed his opinions is fully explained. The writer makes Malcolm Little 's transformation into Malcolm X evident by using descriptive writing to help the reader visualize the violence and changing views regarding Africans in America.
Before Malcolm Little was born, his family had already suffered from the violent nature of racism. Malcolm soon escaped white culture and racial oppression in Lansing and experienced black culture and new struggles for people of color in big cities like Boston and Harlem. His time spent in these cities changed his outlook on racial oppression. After his arrest, Malcolm X 's time spent in jail made him focus his views on racial oppression. His time spent in jail was needed for him to change his life. The author makes it apparent that Malcolm makes many bad life choices and is a victim of racial oppression. Finding Mr. Elijah Muhammad made Malcolm turn his life around, he became the educated and opinionated activist we remember. His father’s death and his mother’s enrollment into a mental hospital showed Malcolm how corrupt everything was and how oppression was everywhere and not just found in hate groups. Malcolm knew the struggle to fit in well and he never tried to change the standards set for him until he found Mr. Muhammad. No white man or woman is better than any other African American. There is no need for any culture to be oppressed. Malcolm formed his strong opinions through out his life, but it wasn 't until he educated himself about his history and the teachings of Mr. Elijah Muhammad that he became Malcolm
