The Making of an EI Nephrology Nurse Introduction In order to foster an environment of success both in patient outcomes and leadership, all nurses must use Emotional Intelligence as a key for awareness, recognition, understanding, and processing of emotional information about themselves and others whatever stage of their career, specialty, and age they may be. As a nurse in the field of Hemodialysis, the writer can never ignore the inseparableness of peoples’ emotions during the day to day interactions between staff and patients, and nonetheless as importantly, the relationship between her as a nurse leader and members of the staff. Emotional Intelligence will be her guide in enhancing her positive traits and abilities. It is her tool for developing strategies in overcoming stress, and anxiety through self-awareness, self-regulation, social-awareness, empathy, and motivation. Handling stress and anxiety also aids in improving social skills as time with family and work staff members will be filled with fewer conflicts (Kotsou, Nelis, Gregoire, & Mikolajczak, 2011). EI is also crucial for physical health as poor mental health can lead to medical problems as well. EI can mediate between mental/ physical health and anxiety/stress, allowing coping skills to be developed. EI can help lower stress and anxiety level and prevent burnout, depression, and even physical ailments.
