Agricultural information to rural communities and poor farmers is important to ameliorate their standards of living, such as market information, land resources and services, management of pets and diseases, rural development programmes, etc. Extension agents are the connecting bridges between the agricultural researchers and farming communities. Their duties require them to become involved in communication with researchers and farming communities. Rogers (2003) stated, “Communication is a process in which participants create and share information with one another in order to reach a mutual understanding” (p. 5). The main elements of communication process are: source or sender, message, communication channels, receivers or audiences, and (effect) …show more content…
Alsuraihi & Bashraheel (2013) mentioned definition for Information and Communication Technologies as “ICT refers to technologies that provide access to information through telecommunications. It is similar to Information Technology (IT), but focuses primarily on communication technologies. This includes the Internet, wireless networks, cell phones, and other communication mediums.” ICT has been used by many organizations to improve services, such as education, healthcare, and economic, agriculture (Rau et al., 2008; O’Neill & Brady, 2012; Luxton et al., 2011; Vignare, 2013). In agriculture, ICT promotes distribution of up-to-date and existing agricultural information and knowledge in the agricultural communities (Swanson and Rajalahti, 2010). Xiaolan & Akter (2011) stated that using ICT to deliver extension services improved the amount, quality, and the speed of services to farmers. Computers, simple phone, smart devices (smartphone, tablets, etc.), and the Internet have advanced numerous methods that extension agents can use to communicate and educate farming and rural communities. Extension agents can use a simple phone to communicate and answer farmers questions by phone calls or send (SMSs) messages. Computers, smart devices (smartphones, tablets, etc.) with access to the Internet provide numerous tools to use to communicate with community members and …show more content…
Extension agents and farmers have used mobile phones to connect and communicate, and phones technologies have made the communication with farming communities easier which help to reduce the time to receive the information (Vignare, 2013). Using the cell phone between extension agents and farmers increase extension agents contact and farmers’ production (Bolarinwa & Oyeyinka, 2011). Many researchers have explained some mobile phone application may be used to help improve agriculture extension services, such as educate and increase farmers knowledge, provide information about market, and collect farmers’ data (Egbule, 2014; Donner, 2009; Dillon, 2012). Egbule et al., (2014) showed in the study by using mobile phones by public extension agents to deliver information to farmers in Nigeria; in this study, extension agents communicate with farmers by phone calls and short message services (SMSs). In the same study, extension agents used mobile phones to send information about availability of new crop varieties, and available markets for sale of crop produce. In addition, mobile phones have been used by extension agents to provide information about markets. For example, Donner (2009) shared some services that use mobile phones to communicate with rural farmers, and one of the services is offering market information. Dillon (2012) has used mobile phones to collect

American agriculture was what made the United States so successful when it first settled. They were able to produce a large amount of cotton and the export it to most of the world, becoming a large producer of this product. The united States as improving and becoming a country of industry with new inventions, policies enacted by the government and the change in economy. Therefore it was not a big surprise when technology, government policy and economics changed, in the period 1850-1900; it also changed the agriculture industry too. Technology was a major impact on the Agriculture industry during this period.
Knowledge is obviously a large part of agriscience education, because that is essentially the career—to extend knowledge about agriculturally related topics to inform and mold the leaders of tomorrow. As a child growing up on a mainly grain farm with a few livestock, my father was always sure to include my siblings and I in his daily tasks, which made me knowledgeable about grain farming and
Nowadays, technology has become an essential part of our society; it helps people to share information and influence minds in good and bad ways. It has changed the aspects of everyday life, such as education, job satisfaction, health care, and leisure time activities. Also, it provides another form of communication and exchange of information which was not available before. For instance, cell phones are the best examples of technology linked to change in today 's world. People have started using Smart
The world is getting smaller, yet remains full of possibilities due in part to technology. Interestingly, the very first emails could only be sent to someone using two computers, literally side by side. Technology dates back to the first manipulations of materials to assist in human survival. There are many definitions for technology, John D. Carl describes technology stating,” it deals with the creation, use, and application of knowledge and its’ interrelation with life, society, and the environment” (Carl, J.D., 2011, p.301). For the purpose of this paper, any instrument, invention, or method influencing and allowing people to control or adapt to their environment, is technology. With the increased availability of technological tools (smart phones, text messaging, image scanning, email, and social media), communication is rapidly changing. Society has moved beyond the Industrial Age and into the Information Age, where the sharing of knowledge and ideas is the new driver of power and world economy. Technology possesses many merits, and as with any tool, it carries drawbacks. Misuse and overuse creates unsavory dependence. This dependence can have adverse affects on people, business, and education. Technology receives vast criticism for reducing face-to-face interactions. Although the information technology of today is widely held as impersonal, it promotes communication; technology reduces costs and leverages productivity by facilitating access to information and knowledge, and augmenting interaction amongst those who utilize technology.
The second step is that broader awareness is required. According to Sarah Alexander, “different farmers trust different sources, such as vendors, crop consultants, and university extension services.” Farmers are going to need to be open minded to new things, in order to feed the human race. The last step is that farmers need the right incentives. Farmers want to know about the good that they are doing.
...earch and extension, rural infrastructure, and market access for small farmers. Rural investments have been sorely neglected in recent decades, and now is the time to reverse this trend. Farmers in many developing countries are operating in an environment of inadequate infrastructure like roads, electricity, and communications; poor soils; lack of storage and processing capacity; and little or no access to agricultural technologies that could increase their profits and improve their livelihoods. Recent unrest over food prices in a number of countries may tempt policymakers to put the interests of urban consumers over those of rural people, including farmers, but this approach would be shortsighted and counterproductive. Given the scale of investment needed, aid donors should also expand development assistance to agriculture, rural services, and science and technology.
Cell phones help us keep in touch with each other and allow us to enjoy media. They’re like computers that are in your pocket with the world right at your fingertips (Schlimm Web). Cell phones are gates to a world where we are all connected in one civilized group. “It is a device the ¾ of the world’s inhabitants has access to (Canton Web).” The need for computers now and days are slowly becoming less needed with phones being miniature computers (Schlimm Web).
Communication is an important aspect of processing and transferring information in our society. The important entities needed for a successful communication includes; a sender, receiver, message and feedback. First, the sender is a person or entity that is sending information to the receiver. After receiving the message, the receiver will attempt to decode the message and prepares a proper response (feedback). Communication is an essential part of our daily interactions; it can be seen used in businesses, for pleasure, sports, education and many more activities.
People have depended on agriculture for years as the primary source of getting food. We have developed all kinds of ways to manipulate nature so what we can produce higher yield crops, more nutritious crops, bigger crops, crops that withstand cold, and farming equipment that allows us to manufacture these crops with relative ease. Why then are there five billion people being malnourished and forty thousand children dying each day from hunger? It seems as though world hunger is more a result of the lack of distributing the food properly than the lack of quantity. agriculture has turned into a high profit business and biotech companies like Monsanto are constantly trying to come up with better and more efficient ways of farming. Are they doing this to try to solve the world hunger crisis, or merely to make a profit?
There are different types of technology; the most common type is information technology, which includes smart phones, computers/laptops, GPS and many other devices. Smart phones make it easier to reach people by calling, texting, chatting, Snap chatting and even
The first area where technology and society relates most is communication. People in a society must pass information from one person to another to maintain order. Traditionally, information dissemination was done using inefficient methods such as the messengers and would take long time before it reached to the intended recipient depending on the distance. Technological advancement that resulted in introduction of more efficient means of communication such as mobile phones and computers led to contextualization of the Information and Communications Technology (ICT). This had a direct impact on the society as now information could be disseminated amongst a larger group and in the contemporary wo...
The presence of computers, phones, internet and wireless devices have broadened the web of connectivity by changing long distances to short ones where everyone is equal distance from the other through the present connections. Leaving without technology will be totally impossible as this has become every day’s application as more and more people are gaining knowledge on how to make use of the communication tools to improve their ways of living and staying informed on the current technology to avoid being left behind. New technologies are being developed daily which shows that the industry will continue to grow and expand. People will continue using these technologies to improve their standards and to stay informed
As Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon for changing the world”. Living in this day and age where people are so out of touch with where their food actually comes from is leaving a gap in knowledge about agriculture. I know I am just one person but if I can just educate others on how things in the
