What are the four main causes of the Civil War?
The Civil War was the bloodiest war ever to take place on American soil. The Civil War proved how far men would go to defend what they love, even if it meant killing your own family“...I would strike down my brother if he dare to raise a hand to destroy the flag.” (McPherson 15). It may seem that the war was caused from the differing opinions on slavery, but that is a very shallow assumption. There are numerous political and social causes of the Civil War. Four of these causes include conflicting politics, slavery, the States’ Rights debate, and lastly differing cultural developments,
Conflicting politics were a cause of the civil war. Northern and Southern states conflict began with the Compromise of 1820, also known as the Missouri Compromise. The compromise was to solve the “slave state” debate. Decisions were made here was that any state that was to be admitted to the union that was located above the 36° 30’ line of latitude was to be a non slave state (Custer 16). This settled the debate until the annexation of Texas. Essay about Slavery Is The Main Cause Of The Civil War

- “Slavery was embraced, almost without question, by nearly everyone save the slaves themselves” (Boritt 11). Slavery was a political issue which deepened the two “sides” of this nation and whenever two people have differences, there is bound to be issues, which is what exactly happened to slavery. Slavery plagued the two sides, North and South, and the gap towards peace slowly grew father away with time. I believe that the Civil War was fought due to slavery not economic issues. I believe the Constitution, tariffs, land disagreements, the Dredd Scott Case, the Fugitive Slave Act and Lincoln’s presidency all had an influential role in why slavery is the main cause of the Civil War....   [tags: Slavery in the United States, Slavery]

The Battle Of The Civil War Essay

- If one thing is certain of the Civil War, it is the fact that this war was the bloodiest war that happened on American soil, with over 620,000 people dying. Another thing that is certain is the fact that slavery was the cause of the Civil War Or is it. Obviously, the Civil War was caused by slavery; the issue of slavery being legal in certain states -- causing many political fights -- and talk of making slavery illegal, ultimately lead the southern slave states to secede from the United States to form the Confederate States of America and decide to fight the rest of the states over the issue....   [tags: American Civil War, Slavery]

Essay on The Civil War

- However, the war had not broken out with the direct aim of emancipation as many slaves persuaded Northerners to adopt the aim of emancipation, ‘for most Northerners, the war that ended slavery began only as a war to restore the union’. It was not until July 1861 that many radicals hoped the war would end the slavery institution. This would therefore suggest that the main cause of the Civil War was the desire to restore the union and create a unified nation, but in order to restore the union, the disputable matter of slavery had to be settled as Lincoln proposed....   [tags: American Civil War, Compromise of 1850]
