Can a strong and loyal general change into a weak and detached character? Macbeth’s ambition warped him into becoming a cold-blooded killer, emotionally numbed by the acts he commits. In the beginning of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, three witches deliver a prophecy to Macbeth and Banquo that Macbeth will one day be king. Macbeth becomes bewildered and staggered by the prophecies announced by the witches, however, his awe does not delay his action. Macbeth is a resilient general who killed for loyalty that transformed into a blood covered guilty king who kills to gain his position. Macduff does not attend Macbeth’s coronation making Macbeth guarded. Macbeth also goes to the witches again and they deliver apparitions of the future for Macbeth, the first apparition states “Macbeth! Macbeth! Macbeth! Beware Macduff. Beware the thane of Fife. Let me go. Enough”(A4, S1). The apparition gives motive for Macbeth, at this point he is impulsive and acts without thinking. Macbeth summons the murders again and asks them to kill Macduff’s family. Macbeth states ,“I will do this deed before I lose my sense of purpose” this quote implies the spattering of Macduff’s families blood and the thoughtless actions of Macbeth. Like Banquo, Macbeth indirectly murders Macduff’s family. Macbeth has gone far enough to kill the innocent and loses his sense of self. Macbeth indirectly is associated with the murder of Macduff’s family, the track record of the other murders leads to Macbeth. Macduff’s family being murdered shows what appears to be normal to Macbeth but the reality is, he isn’t killing for Scotland he is killing for himself. As the witches presented Macbeth with the apparitions Macbeth was told by the second apparition “Be violent, bold, and firm. Laugh at the power of other men, because nobody born from a woman will ever harm Macbeth.”(A4, S1) Macbeth follows the witches’ predictions, even though they are not in his best interest. They deliver the prophecy to Macbeth that no man born by woman can harm him, however, Macduff was birthed by being “untimely ripped” from his mother’s womb. Macduff then makes the prophecy become achieved because he was not birthed of woman. Macduff kills Macbeth and slays him out of revenge for his family. Macbeth believed he was invincible towards humanity because of the prophecies and apparitions the witches brought forth to him, conversely, he manifested the problems for himself not the witches. Macduff spilling Macbeth’s blood out of revenge communicates the message of appearance vs. reality because Macbeth to himself was indestructible but the reality was he was his own worst enemy and destruction to
