Loyalty by Yulia Drunina

Aldous Huxley once said, “One of the great attractions of patriotism - it fulfills our worst wishes. In the person of our nation we are able, vicariously, to bully and cheat. Bully and cheat, what's more, with a feeling that we are profoundly virtuous” (Huxley, 2013). Yulia Drunina’s poem “Loyalty” is about her devotion to her motherland Russia. Yulia Drunina is a Russian poem writer that writes a lot of her poems about Russia. Yulia wrote the poem “Loyalty” to describe her love for her dying motherland. This poem’s meaning is that Yulia loves Russia so much that she will never forget about it and go wherever it goes.

The speaker of the poem is Yulia Drunina. She grew up in the U.S.S.R and wrote the poem “Loyalty”. She loves the old Russia in which she grew up in and then started writing poems about it. The tone feels sad and slow due to her dreams dying. For example, the poem states and talks about memories that will not fade away forever and the will to go with Russia wherever it goes. She even states “Whatever happens to you, and may happen to me hereafter” (Drunina, 1946). Reading this, people can assume that she is attached to Russia with every fiber of herself. The mood that Yulia wants the reader to feel is sadness mixed with a bit of joy in the beginning. Throughout the poem she describes place she lives in as a peaceful place fading away through time. She wrote something that would translate to “Even if you disappear or change into something else, I will still always be attached to your old self.” This makes the reader feel the sadness of leaving something you are so attached to (Drunina, 1946).

She talks a lot about her feelings of the place and how peaceful and sad it is to let go of the thing she loves the most. This should be on people’s read lists because it gives a sense of losing something that is dear to everyone. This is a great poem by Yulia Drunina that talks about her beloved U.S.S.R and how she is loyal to it.
