Alcohol has been a part of human society for thousands of years. In many cultures, alcohol is used in numerous important social occasions and in religious ceremonies. Alcohol is also used to celebrate, to mourn, to create friendships, and to seal business deals. In 1984, Congress raised the minimum legal drinking age from eighteen years old to twenty years old. As a result of this act, adults who are between the ages of eighteen and twenty and who are of age to serve and die for their country, get married, vote, and serve on a jury, are no longer allowed to have access to alcohol and relieve themselves after a hard and stressful day. If the United States allows eighteen and twenty year olds to consume alcoholic beverages in regulated environments, the amount of alcohol a person consumes in one sitting would decrease greatly (“Should The Drinking Age Be Lowered From 21 to 18?” 1, 2). Drinking in an area with supervision, people know that if they commit a crime they will be caught. The bartenders, security, and people in the bar will intervene on a situation if someone is not obeying the law. When someone drinks too much alcohol or shows any sign that they are wasted, the bartender can stop serving them drinks and restrict them from further intoxication, potentially saving that person from any further self-harm or others around them at the time (1, 2). If drinking at the age of eighteen was not viewed as criminal activity, but instead as of an activity done with responsibility and done in moderation, then it would become less of a problem with men and women who are entering the college level. College students under the age of twenty one are going to drink whether the law says it is illegal or not. To believe otherwise is pure ignorance. Young adults feel that if they can get away with drinking, they can get away with much more. The minimum drinking age of twenty one encourages highschool seniors and college kids to commit different crimes in order to obtain alcohol. Many young adults will pay for false identification cards to acquire alcohol, get into bars, music festivals, or keg parties (“18 Interesting Pro Lowering The Drinking Age Statistics” 1). In this era of national security concerning illegal immigration, terrorism, and other threats, it would be more ideal to have fewer fake identification cards in circulation throughout our country. Making false identification cards is easily done for those who can use photo manipulation programs like Photoshop, Gimp, and Paint Shop. One campus survey found that fifty five percent of students on a single campus had or currently have a fake identification card. A study in 2009 of Universities across the United States found that seventeen percent of freshman and thirty two percent of seniors own false identification cards.
