Asking someone out might seem a little hard for a group of people, but most couples start happy lives easily. On the other hand, some do not have enough social skills to start an exciting conversation, or they are too shy to start a conversation. Meanwhile, some people have enough social abilities, but they do not have a stunning appearance. Eliot in “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” decided to create a character named J. Alfred Prufrock who is one of the most unfortunate characters who is afraid of socializing with women because he is not confident enough, so it makes a great sense of dissatisfaction and loneliness in him. Getting close to the upper level women who just talk about art is hard for him and makes him give up. He also adds, “I am no prophet — and here’s no great matter” (83), to illustrate that he is sad and lonely as a prophet does not belong to these ceremonies and he will not have anyone to talk to however he explains that he is not prophet. Elliot created such awkward character in the poem because of the following reasons. Eliot spent his graduate school in Sorbonne, and he met Jean Verdenal, who was a medical student. Verdenal died in his 20’s serving his country in World War one. Eliot dedicated this poem to him, and it seems that name of his poem’s character starts with J in memory of Jean Verdenal (Perinot 44-51). Eliot designed this character to have an unsatisfying ending because his friend dead in his youth.
