“The Lottery” and “The Necklace” In “The Lottery,” Shirley Jackson uses setting to reflect the character and development of the character of all the village people how they play lottery, but I pick the old men “Warner” to reflect the character, how he went through the crowd for seventy-seventh year time in this life. In “The Necklace” Guy de Maupassant uses Mathilde Loisel as a main character to develop the character to reflect the setting. Both stories “The Necklace” and “The Lottery” was about the family was important to lives. The story, “The Lottery” took place every year with the all people of the village. The character of the story lives in a small community of almost 300 people (Jackson 1). Warner, the old man spends his childhood in the same society, and retire from the same society with the same tradition. Warner said that every year lottery bring only trouble in the society (Jackson). Warner said lottery bring trouble because at the time of lottery people grave the stone and through to the people at the end of lottery. The old men know everything but then also he follows tradition of the village. Why he could not stop lottery in the village? In the story “The Necklace”, Mathilde wants to compares herself with the society’s people. Mathilde compare about her beauty and her poorness with wealthy people in the society. At the being of story, “The Lottery” children looks like playing stones, but that was not fact. The fact was that those collected stones were for throwing the people at the ends of lottery. Every year the old men alone with his family and all other family needs their support of each other to protect from stones attack. Old man warner was saying, “Come on, come on, everyone”, after people start hitting each other by stone (Jackson). In the story “The Necklace” Mathilde, borrow a necklace from her rich friend to wear at ministry party (Maupassant 23). While walking in a party she loses it. That was an expensive diamond necklace and they need to buy another. Before she did not like her husband because of his poorness, but after her mistake she needs husband to help to paid off the necklace’s fee. “The Necklace” and “The lottery” were the story, which shows how family is important to us. In fact, “The Necklace” and “The Lottery” was the two stories, which almost related with each other story in the street, society, and in the family. After reading the stories “The Lottery” and “The Necklace”, I learn many things to change my society. Both stories “The Necklace” and “The Lottery” started from street and ends in the street, both are about society and family
