During the European Middle Ages, debt among the lower class was rampant, prompting serfdom and indentured servitude. Men, women, and children would pledge their service to a Lord or Baron and work for them in order to pay a debt. In exchange for their services their Lord would provide them with basic protection and necessity. As soon as the debt was paid, the serf or servant was allowed to leave their Lord, however, they minimal money that they were sent off with was almost never enough to match the price of living, leading them back into serfdom or servitude. This relationship between a Lord or Baron and their serf or servant is called feudalism, or an economic system in which the government functions for the benefit of a small, wealthy minority. Similarly in modern society, common people work for corporations in order to match the cost of living. This system, recognized as Neo-Feudalism perpetuates the dominance of the highest quintile seeing as the government functions to their benefit,

Students of lower socioeconomic status tended to work more hours, which as predicted, impacts grades negatively. The study also mentioned that working in high school can benefit grades so long as the student works under 12 hours a week. After the 12 hour mark, GPA gradually decreases by -.22 by the hour. Seeing as lower socioeconomic class students are the ones who are working the most out of the rest of the test group, and a large amount of hours negatively impacts grades, the likelihood of the student being able to progress from that job is much lower as their gpa is likely to continuously drop the more that they work.
