Lord of the Flies
In the story the Lord of the flies, Jack, Ralph and Roger saw “, before them something like a great ape that was sitting asleep with its head in between his knees.” (Golding pg. 123.) In the story there are three main symbolic characters Ralph, Piggy and Jack. In the story, Ralph portrayed a character of leadership, Piggy was one of the brighter figures in the story that no one listened to and the rules that existed among the characters did not apply to him, Jack manipulates the characters throughout the story in order to gain control and impose his savage will.
Ralph is the leader of the boys on the island. Ralph was voted by the boys on the island to be the leader. Ralph is a symbolic character in this story because he shows leadership, courage, determination, and responsibility. Ralph is always one to be quick to judge on his decisions. Ralph has to make decisions that can be life threating to everyone on the island in a spilt second and hardly has time to think of a better solution. Ralph said, “You hunters! You can laugh! Piggy is a symbolic character in the story because he is very smart and he has bright ideas, but when it comes time for his turn to speak, when he has the conch, the rules don’t apply to him. The conch is like a stick you hold and whoever is holding it only has permission to speak. They don’t listen to him even though they know his is right most of the time. Jack said, “When piggy picked up the counch Jacks nonverbal behavior gives this away…. Jack left his feet looked uncertainly at ralph suggestion that he does not think piggy’s comment will be worth listening too.” (Golding pg. 103.)Piggy is impervious after and after people make fun of him and don’t listen to him.
