Lord of the Flies by William Golding was novel about a group of English schoolboys who got stranded on an island with no adults, fending for themselves. With nothing but the clothes on their backs, they had to start building a little community by electing a leader, making shelters, and finding food. Ralph was the leader of the kids since he was the oldest and strongest. Each boy represented something different whether it was wisdom, reason or truth. Golding wanted to portray that all human beings are savage by nature, and are moved by urges toward brutality and dominance over others.
Goldings character developement of Jack addresses the idea of human beings are savages by nature. At the beginning he was power crazy and was upset when he wasn't leader. For a while he maintains the discipline that civilization had established in him. “We’ve got to have rules and obey them. After all, we’re not savages” (Golding 42) Jack says establishing order among the kids and trying to be a leader like he wanted in the first place.
