The researchers used an iPad to aid the participants in learning, practicing, and mastering a range of up to six different phonemes. An app called, “Touch Sound” was used to help generalize the participants in being able to identify different phonemes first on the iPad and then on a worksheet with a paper and pen. “Touch Sounds” was paired with a controlled time delay. The participants of this study would be shown a screen with a word such as “ice-cream” and then asked which word from “igloo”, “cat”, or “house” began with the same sound. If the participant answered correctly there would be a sound that would go off after 5 seconds, demonstrating to the participant that he answered correctly....

This article encourages and challenges me in how I could use my iPad either in the remaining portion of my student teaching or in my own classroom next year. Even though Using iPad App to Improve Phonological Awareness Skills in Young English-Language Learners With Disabilities focused on English Language Learners with disabilities, I could still have my struggling readers to use different apps to help enhance and improve my student’s literacy development in order to see how if it would benefit my students or not. There are numerous other apps that could be used in the classroom to improve literacy development or other content areas such as math, science, or social studies. I am sure my students would love to use the iPad to aid in their learning process.
