Great Schism – 1054 AD
Split between the eastern (orthodox) and western churches (roman)
13 primary factors that contributed to the great schism
1. Happened around year 325 AD when the Nicene creed was formulated when 300 bishops from the west and east gathered together to decide against accurate wording for the trinity.
2. Western delegation left the meeting before the end and whilst they were gone the east added the 28th cannon
3. Power play: the western pope never participated personally in any of the councils but sent his delegates to inform the councils of his decisions
Pope Leo the great in the 5th century said, “we can share our responsibilities but not our power”. The western scene seemed far most interested in father hood than brother hood. The east decided they could play the same game so the eastern emperor and his minister decided they could rule the whole Roman Empire. The main reason for construction of Rome was caused by the east empire trying to re-attach the western empire to itself. It didn’t promote a good relationship between the east and the west- especially when the eastern delegation was blasting the Roman Empire to bits. *This all so far has happened over centuries
4. Struggle for power: in 478 the western emperor was deposed which produced 2 outcomes:
a) The emperor in the east became the only emperor there was and assumed he could rule all.
b) Many of the bishops in the west were ex-members of the Roman ruling class. They had not ceased to exist- they just went from secular and took their ambitions with them.
So now they had formed two strong sides and both sides were refusing to surrender there power. By the 5th and 6th century the East and the West had shaped two very different traditions.
