Introduction

An operating system or OS is a software program that enables the computer hardware to communicate and operate with the computer software. Without a computer operating system, a computer and software programs would be useless. An example of an operating system would be Microsoft Windows.

In this research, we will go down a brief history of Linux, an open-source operating system and then to see the current development of open-source & proprietary operating systems. We will then go through the evolution of operating systems and see a comparison between an open source & proprietary operating systems. 
History of Linux

The first founder of LINUX was a man named Linus Torvalds. He graduated from the University of Helsinki in Finland where he first developed the Linux kernel. In the early 1990’s, the only available Operating Systems were UNIX, DOS and Mac OS. UNIX was used by a university Professor named Andrew S.
