Lincoln: The Vampire Hunter
One of the greatest men to walk this earth was our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln. As we all know Lincoln achieved many attributes in his time. Some of his most famous achievements include: signing off on the Emancipation Proclamation, giving numerous speeches like the Inaugural Address and Gettysburg Address, and ending one of the most brutal battles in history: the Civil War. What we weren’t taught in class or through reading history books was that Lincoln became a unique type of hunter that killed vampires while on his road to presidency. It wasn’t until 2012, when director Tim Bekmambetov turned the novel Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter into a film that Lincoln fans began to see him as more than a great President, but also a vampire hunter. According to Mike Scott in his review about Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, the film “re-imagines our 16th president as a secret, ax-wielding slayer of bloodsuckers” (Mike Scott). The movie is not meant to be a documentary, it’s rather an action packed bloody mess. Furthermore, while the film doesn’t hit all of the highlights of Lincoln’s life, it rewrites history just a little bit.

He is of great importance not just in American history, but world history as well. So why not create misconceptions with the public and portray him as a vampire hunter? Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter originally began as a novel by Seth-Grahame Smith and was a people pleaser when it hit the shelves in 2010. Bekmambetov took the opportunity to make the biographical action horror mash-up and turn it into a film. In an interview with writer Seth-Grahame Smith, Smith stated: “I wrote it with an eye towards pleasing the people who love history and the people who love horror. “Chasing Lincoln’s Killer” is a true story about the assassination attempts of Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth president of the United States. Lincoln was president during the Civil War, which was a war between the Union and Confederate. Most everybody got to choose a side to root for, either the Northern policies or the Southern cause. Although John Wilkes Booth worked in the north, Booth was an unyielding supporter of the Confederate cause. Booth execrated President Lincoln and what he stood for.
“ Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer”, was written by James L. Swanson, a dedicated Lincoln scholar and attorney. He details in his book the incredible escape of John Wilkes Booth’s from authorities, with immaculate descriptions of little-known facts in the case of Lincoln’s Killer. Swanson’s nonfiction book dives into actual pieces of literature written at the time of Lincoln’s assassination by individuals who actually took part in the real-life drama, including John Wilkes Booth himself.April 14, 1865 is a day of infamy in United States history,it is the day that John Wilkes Booth assassinated Abraham Lincoln. Swanson delves deep into the minds of Booth and his accomplices , analyzing their every move. Without a doubt, Abraham Lincoln is one of the most celebrated people in American history. Between time span of the years 1800-1900, Abraham Lincoln is a man that stands out from the rest because of his accomplishments during life and presidency. Lincoln most definitely helped shape the United States into what it is today, with lasting benefits of equality for all, regardless of skin color. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter has a similar contrast to Abraham Lincoln's real life. The story does take a turn on actual historical events, that may bring you to believe that these events happened. From the presidency to the child's death, here events lead to the idea of this story being true. Abe may have had some hidden secrets that were later uncovered for all to see.
When it comes to writing literature authors sometimes use the same information regarding the topic, however they use it in a completely different way. A great example for this situation would be Doris Kearns Goodwin’s Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln vs. Seth Grahame-Smith’s Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter. Both of these great books discuss the topic on Abraham Lincoln, however the author’s demonstrate his role in two different genres. Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter discuses Lincoln’s secret life as a vampire hunter, this is clearly a fiction genre and Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln discuss the political life of Lincoln’s presidency, this is clearly non-fiction. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter has the amount of historical accuracy as one would expect of an action movie about vampires- sadly, that is not very much. In this movie, it’s not enough that Abraham Lincoln saved the union: he also had to defeat an army of vampires, and singlehandedly win the Civil War. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, although it might be appealing to a die-hard action fanatic, is not recommended for the average history-buff who wants an accurate display of Abraham Lincoln’s life, his presidency, or the war.

Shockingly, among these statesmen is Abraham Lincoln. Hofstadter criticizes both his legacy and his political intentions. This book is a mashup, because the writer took a classic character and added something to make the character more interesting. Lincoln is continuously letting a lead vampire escape because, he must be on time to a party or gala. It would social murder to not be there during his campaign for president and marriage to Mary Todd. Instead of saving more lives, he was stuck in a ocean and rules (Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter).
In the book, Dracula by Bram Stoker there are many characters that display qualities of good verse evil. The Count Dracula is a mysterious character who appears as an odd gentleman but the longer the story goes on Dracula shows his true self. Dracula started infiltrating the lives of anyone who crossed his path and he was not stopping his destruction of others’ lives. Many people were affect by Dracula’s actions but there were two people that Dracula caused an impact on during his rampage. Dracula is an evil, cunning, and selfish character who harms the life of a young man and ruins the future of an innocent woman.
Abraham Lincoln is regarded by many Americans as the greatest president to ever hold office in the history of the United States, and his reputation is definitely well deserved. Lincoln wasn't scared to stand up and fight for what he knew was right. He was convinced that within the branches of government, the presidency alone was empowered not only to uphold the Constitution, but also to protect, and defend it. Lincoln was able to lead our country and preserve the Union, keeping the United States from splintering during the devastating times of the Civil War. As President, he built the Republican Party into a strong national organization, and he rallied most of the northern Democrats to the Union cause. On January 1, 1863, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation that changed the war into a battle for freedom and declared forever free those slaves within the Confederacy. That November, Lincoln gave his famous Gettysburg Address, which stated how a country must be dedicated to human freedom in order to survive. He dedicated the battlefield to the soldiers who had perished, and called on the living to finish the task the dead soldiers had begun. (Donald, 1995) Lincoln believed that democracy could be a lasting form of government. He showed a nobility of character that had worldwide appeal, and he was a man of great integrity. However, Lincoln was not only the 16th president of the United States, he was an American hero. Lincoln was a well-rounded individual and he had numerous outstanding qualities. However, it is important to remember that Lincoln also led a private life, complete with close friends and family.
Gore Vidal’s “Lincoln” was an excellent narrative of the Presidency of Abraham Lincoln. Through Vidal’s portrayal of the personality of Lincoln and the people surrounding him it was easy to get an idea of the leadership role that Lincoln played during presidency. After reading many accounts of Lincoln during my research for my paper, I found that Vidals account was extremely accurate. Most interesting was the commanding yet passive relationship that Lincoln had with the members of his cabinet and his generals. Vidal also gave a portrayal of the capitol during the 1860’s that is seldom mentioned in any of the Literature that I have read. These accounts really help to get a feel for the environment in which Lincoln made his decisions. Lincoln’s family life was also revealed in some detail in the novel which helps us to see the personal dilemmas and tragedies that Lincoln had to overcome while he was president. Overall Vidal’s portrait of Lincoln was interesting and accurate to my knowledge. It gives an extraordinary view of the leadership of President Abraham Lincoln.
