Claire Farron, also known as Lightning, is a twenty-one year old woman who is a sergeant in the military. She is very determined to finish her duties independently without any one stopping her. She is also cold-hearted and distances herself from her companions if she feels slowed down by others. Lightning is very harsh to everyone around her because she has never known how to love. Lightning’s mother and father died when she was seven-years old. She was left alone with her sister, Serah. With no other family to seek help, Lighting raised Serah on her own. She needed to be strong for Serah, so she changed her name from Claire Farron to Lightning. By changing her name, she was letting go of her past and became an entirely new person. “You’re a liability. You’ll just slow me down. I can’t protect you when I can barely keep myself alive.” is said by Lightning to her comrade when they were running away from the soldiers who wanted to eliminate them. She portrays hostility and dominance from her quote because she wanted her companion to stop following her. While pushing her companion away, she was also showing dominance so Lightning can leave him in that moment. She lacks the “moving towards” interpersonal relationship which is why later on she feels guilty, but doesn’t portray it because she feels she is bringing her old self back. Foreclosure is one of the four identity status created by James Marcia. In the foreclosure stage, the individual conforms to duties and tasks without exploring his/her identity. In other words, the individual who is in the foreclosure stage feels their job and duties are “meant to be” without exploring what they really desire. Her only thoughts were weapons and destruction during her time as a fugitive from the military who were once her second hand. She could not think of any alternatives to bring back her old life, so her military training proved to her that she was meant to be a destructive weapon. Striving from inferiority to superiority comes from Alfred Adler’s theory of individual psychology. Inferiority evokes feelings of being less than others by status or quality, but inferiority can be a good sign. From feeling less than others, it drives the individual’s motivation to conquer his/her trials to become superior. Many individuals encounter a sense of inferiority, and each of them uniquely approaches them depending on their personality and behavior. After Lightning has been running away from every military soldier she has encountered, she decides to face the source of the problem by meeting with the lieutenant. She knew solving her issues will be slim because it could bring her to her death, but the small hope she had lifted her motivation to reach far superior than the lieutenant. “Sure, you think the end of the world is salvation.
