Life of Julius Caesar
Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus Augustus was born on July 12th, 100 B.C. He was born in Rome to Gaius and Aurelia Caesar. His family was Roman aristocrats but they were far from rich. Julius Caesar’s birth marked the beginning of a new chapter in Roman history. When Caesar was sixteen years old, his father, Gaius Caesar, passed away. After his father’s death, Julius Caesar became very close to his mother, Aurelia. Julius then married Cornelia, the daughter of a noble. Sulla, Rome’s leader, ordered Caesar to divorce Cornelia, but he refused and escaped to the military (Television). This was the start of Julius Caesar’s rise to power. From the time Julius Caesar joined the military to when he conquered Gaul and Spain to when became dictator shows and proves why he was arguable the greatest military general of all time.
When Julius Caesar first joined the military, he served in the province of Asia and following that he served in Cilicia (Television). Since Caesar was part of an aristocratic family, he started out as a military assistant to a provincial governor (Julius Caesar). He proved himself an important soldier, even being awarded an honor for saving a soldier’s life in a battle. In his time as a soldier, Caesar was successful and decided to return to Rome and became an orator, a modern-day lawyer. In Rome, Caesar was elected military tribune and married Pompeia after his wife Cornelia died. Rising in importance in Rome, Caesar had enough prestige to support Pompey for a generalship. While Caesar was helping Pompey, he befriended the richest man in Rome, Crassus. Crassus helped Caesar win the election for the position of Chief Priest in 63 B.C. On March 15, 44 B.C., the Ides of March, Caesar was assassinated by conspirators led by Brutus and Cassius, some of the other conspirators included Casca, Trebonius, and Metellus Cimber. Caesar was stabbed twenty three times and died at the base of Pompey’s statue (Ancient History Encyclopedia). With the death of Caesar, it ended his reign and life (Television). Mark Antony turned the side of the Roman plebeians against the conspirators and, allied with Octavian defeated the forces of Brutus and Cassius at the Battle of Philippi in 42 B.C (Ancient History Encyclopedia). Julius Caesar turned the Roman Republic into a Roman Empire. His victory in the civil war replaced a republic, ruled by the consuls and the Senate, with an empire, reigned over by emperors and their heirs. Julius Caesar started a new age for Rome (PBS).
