Georg Fredric Handel
Eccentric art and musical styles it what comes to most minds at the mention of the Baroque Era, and for good reason too. This was a time when many renowned composers and musicians, such a Bach, Handel and Strozzi were in their musical prime. The era itself was named for the differing musical styles that were emerging during it, that consequently changed how music was both played and written for the world after. Handel was among one of the most recognized and accomplished composers of this time, completing hundreds of compositions in differing styles in record time.
“The Hallelujah Chorus” from Handel’s “Messiah” is possibly one of the most well known and beloved piece of music from the Baroque period. It can still be heard from church choirs and radio stations during the Christmas season and you would be hard put to find an individual without some inclining as to what the familiar melody of this chorus is. However, most people are completely unaware of the fact that the composer of this familiar Christmas carol had a wonderful career of composing many pieces, or even the fact that “The Hallelujah Chorus” stems from a much larger composition.
Georg Fredric Handel, born on February 23, 1685 was the son of Georg and Dorothea Handel. At a young age Handel showed great musical potential and so his parents hired a tutor for the young boy in both musical instruments and composing. Handel was offered many great opportunities by powerful men as he grew but his parents kept him at home until he came of age, when he went to the University of Halle. Handel took to traveling Europe and working as the organist at churches or the theater director wherever he chose to stay. This travel helped to make Handel a very famou...
