Is it possible to give up everything you have grown to count on in life for the sake of Christ? This is a question that usually has a very simple answer when placed against biblical text. That answer is a resounding yes! After all, when you look at the patriarchs and prophets of the Old Testament, and the disciples of the New Testament, the examples of people giving everything to serve the Most High God are to numerous to list here. However, I have found this is easier to conceptualize then to put into motion in one’s own life. Counting the costs on what one must truly give up to be a slave to Christ can become a freighting occurrence.

I believe this is meant to shake a person’s perception of reality in order to make them realize the error of their way. For Jonah, this came in the form of a big fish that swallowed him up until he realized that it is pointless to run from God. For me, it came in the form of a terrifying spiritual breakdown after a multitude of sins made me understand that my path, at the time, was leading to destruction. I believe that is what Paul was talking about in 1 Corinthians 5:5 when he ordered a man to be handed over to Satan. In the end, a few things stood out that helped me make the right choice. For one, it was the realization that it wouldn’t be fifteen years wasted in a career I would no longer have. It would be fifteen years of spiritual training for what God had planned for me in the ministry. Second, the time spent watching my father deal with all the problems that come with church work was likened to that of an apprentice.
