Until recently, there were never any LGBTQ courses within a classroom. California was the first state to ever teach a LGBTQ curriculum. This has led to ignorance towards different sexualities. Most students are not taught about the varieties of sexualities. Therefore, they misjudge and undervalue people who differ from them. Even though Others may believe that one should not learn about LGBTQ studies because it does not apply to them, If more people were educated on LGBTQ studies, it would help increase their understanding of sexuality because it helps people understand the historical changes that LGBT members have been through, It promotes equality, and It gives people a different perspective on sexuality than the one they identify with. …show more content…

In the 21st century, the terms homosexual and heterosexual are by far the most used and recognized terms in society. You are admittedly categorized in one of the other based on your gender preference. However, if people were to take LGBTQ studies, they would learn that the term homosexul is actually a fairly new term. The term homosexual was not introduced until the late 1860s. Not only that, there is a notion in society now that if you have sex with another man, you are predominantly gay. However, before the 19th century, It was stated in the article “Is there a history of Sexuality” by David Halperin that sexual acts were based only on dominance and economic status. For example, Halperin 's argues that there is no history of sexuality because many of the adult males citzens would haves ex with anyone regardless of gender because they could. This goes against the current idea of sexuality because there was never a such thing before now. I believe if more people were to read about the history of sexuality, especially witin the LGBTQ dcommunity, they would become more familiar with what sexuality actually mean. It will cause them to think harder about what they believe sexuality is and whether or not it is the same thing now as it was in the past. This is one step in the right direction. The LGBTQ is a huge community within society. More people should take out time to learn an inept lesson on the things their fellow citizens had to overcome. With a greater education on sexuality differences, I believe people will not be as afraid to talk about sexuality. This will promote equality because more people will understand the differences and similarities between all the sexualities possible. Not only that, it will help them identify with on identity more because they will have more of a background on all types of preferences. If a LGBTQ course was given to every student in the United States, I would focus primarily on the history of LGBTQ people because in order to fully understand and grasp an idea, you have to understand where it originated from. In this case, homosexuality was constructed through society, so with the help of a new, more informed society, it could be the start to a de-construction on the stigmas and stereotypes surrounding LGBTQ people. This would, in the end, create a more equal, diverse society and
