Are The LGBT Youth Safe At School?

LGBT is the acronym Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender. In recent years, it has been extended to LGBTQ+, including the term “Queer” and the “+” indicating that there are various sexualities and gender types that people identify themselves as. However, the issue that will be covered pertains more towards those that are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender because they tend to be more open about their identity. One of the many issues that the LGBT youth face in today’s society is oppression in schools, especially in middle and high schools. This oppression is typically overlooked because most people assume that those of the LGBT have all of the rights equal to those that their fellow heterosexual, cisgender citizens have, but that doesn’t rule out the fact that they are still discriminated against and oppressed because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Research on this question has resulted in the fact that most of these adolescents are experiencing a very hostile school environment. These adolescents are more likely than their heterosexual counterparts to be in trouble in school, more likely to feel unsafe and disconnected from others, more likely to be depressed, more likely to use/abuse drugs and alcohol, and much more likely to commit suicide.
