Recommended: Decision making and its consequences
All through life, we experience various occasions when decision-making become necessary. A number of them present themselves in difficult forms and at crucial points. Most of the verdict we take will eventually figure and describe our track of lives. These are what we refer to as lessons of life. Choices never present themselves in an easy way. In some instance we are always forced to pay a price to achieve something. This implies that we are trading for an outcome we are seeking.
Period, actions and situation can help us learn a lot about our environment, ourselves and people in general. They give us an opportunity to face our reliability, integrity, accountability and skills of dealing with life result. In the beginning, people have the tendency to hide their internal wounds and anguish as opposed to experience hurting feelings. Such feelings might seem tough but posses’ equivalent or greater blessings. They act as a journey to human psychological development. It is our responsibility to analyze and learn from each lesson. Otherwise, overtime we will experience greater lessons w...
A human being is a complicated entity of a contradictory nature where creative and destructive, virtuous and vicious are interwoven. Each of us has gone through various kinds of struggle at least once in a lifetime ranging from everyday discrepancies to worldwide catastrophes. There are always different causes and reasons that trigger these struggles, however, there is common ground for them as well: people are different, even though it is a truism no one seems to able to realize this statement from beyond the bounds of one’s self and reach out to approach the Other.
Tests and decisions are as numerous in any man's life as are the beats of his heart. The consequences follow him forever - he is judged by them and they affect his entire existence. However, judgement should not be passed on a man's single decisions individually, but only by observing how he has chosen to live his life.
In the novel A Lesson Before Dying, Grant and Jefferson are black men in the era of a racist society; but they have struggles with a greater dilemma, obligation and commitment. They have obligations to their families and to the town they are part of. They lived in a town were everybody knew everybody else and took care of each other. "Living and teaching on a plantation, you got to know the occupants of every house, and you knew who was home and who was not.... I could look at the smoke rising from each chimney or I could look at the rusted tin roof of each house, and I could tell the lives that went on in each one of them." [pp. 37-38] Just by Grant’s words you can tell that that is a community that is very devoted to each other.
The ending of A Lesson Before Dying gives the reader a sense of despair and then portrays a sense of optimism. Gaines’ writing is unique because the reader feels this hope for the future and optimism without Gaines having to say it. Instead, he wrote about the execution and the hope was picked up from the “little things.” At the reader feels disappointed because Jefferson has died. The optimism comes into play through Grant and the fact that he has learned his lesson(s) from Jefferson. It is also uplifting because Jefferson has died with dignity on the day meant for him. I think that Gaines also throws a curve in at the end through the character of Paul whose purpose seems to stress the hope for the future of Blacks in a white society.
Life is short and it is up to you to make the most out of it. The most important lesson that everyone should follow and apply to everyday life is “never give up”. In the novel, “A Lesson Before Dying” by Ernest J. Gaines, the important lesson can be shown in the characters Jefferson, Miss Emma and Grant Wiggins.
To conclude, personal choices are very significant in one’s life. In “The Use of Force”, by William Carlos Williams and “Lather and Nothing Else, by Hernando Tellez, both authors showed how people make their own judgments every day in life. However, the stories were different in certain cases because the decisions made by the individual caused the conflict to either end in an optimistic way or undesirable way. Personal choices are important because they help people solve conflicts, but the person must be careful if there personal choice they create is strong.
The lady that appears after the first 100 pages of the book turns out to be Vivian, Grant’s secret lover. Grant and Vivian take a walk and after their walk they visit Grant’s aunt, aunt Emma. Aunt Emma and her friends are very fond of Vivian and they give her many compliments. Aunt Emma, and the reverend go to visit Jefferson and they find that Grant’s previous account of Jefferson’s recovery was lie; Jefferson still eats and behaves like a “hog';. Aunt Emma and the reverend confront Grant regarding his faulty account of Jefferson’s recovery. Once again, Grant visits Jefferson and tries to convince him that he is not a hog and he is a man. After a couple more visits from the ladies and Grant, the chapter ends off with the whole town watching a Christmas play on the birth of Jesus. After the play, Grant is tired of watching the same play and seeing the same people dressed in the same kinds of clothing year after year.
In the letters that Rilke wrote for Kappus, we can discern that we could learn how to deal with our emotions and psychological experiences from the several perspectives of artists. We can infer that artists put in several types of emotions and unique strategies in dealing with various types of challenges in life. Like the artists, we should learn to be creative by being strong in dealing with emotional setbacks. We are only in charge of ourselves. If we allow our negative emotions to overwhelm us, our loved ones can never help us fully recover if we do not help ourselves.
I thought that the book A Lesson Before Dying was all right overall. I think Ernest Gaines did a good job with the plot but the idea of the book was not to interesting to me. A book about a black man becoming a man on his way to the electric chair is a very dull plot to me. I give Gaines credit for making the book semi-interesting even though the plot was terrible. Personally after reading Things Fall Apart and Song of Solomon I was looking for a little more action in this book. Those two books were ten times better than A Lesson Before Dying so I can say that I was probably expecting too much.
A dynamic character is one who grows and changes during the corse of a novel. Jefferson, in Ernest Gaines’ novel A Lesson Before Dying, is an example of a dynamic character. Throughout the novel, Jefferson grows and matures from a life where he considers himself a hog to a life where he realizes he can defy what is expected from him.
Lastly choice is important because it makes us who we are. We make choices for us nobody can tell us that we have to do something, or that we can’t do something it is up to us to make choices. We make choices, then choices make our life. Life is full of choices whether you make good choices or bad choices. Failure is okay if you learn from it and it makes you stronger. “It is choices that show we are truly more than our abilities.” -J.K Rowley
The message conveyed in this book is that even when the odds are not in your favor you should do what you know is right and it may be tough but it’s worth it.

Making the right choice is a constant dilemma that people are faced with everyday. The importance of making the ‘right choice’ is very important due to the emotional impact that can arise from making the ‘wrong choice’. However, the difficulty lies with determining what the correct choice is. Most people associate the correct choice to be the commonly followed path that everyone else is following as well. In “Stopping...
One simple consideration that can change the course of how people think about their approach to life is, the examination of the influences that they have on other people’s lives. An individual could also look outwards and analyze the impact that other people have on that individual’s life. One should also self-reflect and search for how their thoughts and actions craft a pathway towards their own destiny. The statement by Socrates, “the unexamined life is not worth living,” is an interesting statement that requires a considerable amount of analysis.
