Legos

Legos are the multi-colored blocks we used as children to build creations that were only limited by our imaginations. I remember adding to my multi-colored plastic sculptor, each block putting me one step closer to the final product. The process would always entail first setting up a strong foundation, and then creating structural support, while always having a plan in the back of my mind. The outcome of which, would tower above me; to think it all began with a single block. In many ways people are similar to Legos. We are the combination of our experiences, each adding to our personas, and shaping how we view the world. Also like Legos, to have a stable and functioning final product it must have a foundation, support and a plan. I was able to establish my foundation in high school. During these years my life was an old television with only three channels: home, school and church; each one being similar to the other with little distinction. Even though my life seemed tedious at times, I learned how to focus, pray and never to give up. In hindsight, I believe my parents raise me in this manner out of fear. I did not grow up in the best of neighborhoods, and my older brother was incarcerated while I was growing up, so I can understand their apprehension. Nevertheless, I had a strong moral foundation to enter the unknown know as college. Attending the University of Rochester was like because dropped into the middle of the wilderness with only a calculator and a laptop for defense. I was the first person, not only in my family, but in my neighborhood to attend college; I had no one to refer to for help. I figured that since I liked to help people and I did well in science classes, I decided to become a doctor. But I think the re... ... middle of paper ... ...asterpiece. Now at NCCC I have hit a metaphysical wall. While taking nine classes, working, tutoring, being on student senate, maintaining my 3.94 GPA and having my own business, I find myself not being challenged. While finally mastering time management, I have realized that to continue my growth towards the person that I want to become, I must move on to bigger and better things. Winston Churchill said, “All men make mistakes, but only wise men learn from their mistakes.” While I have learned from my mistakes in the past, all the experiences that I have endured have made me into the person I am today. Even being a work-in-progress, I have a solid foundation, strong internal support and blueprints of the person I will become. And the day I become a complete multi-colored sculptor of experiences and hard work, I will have helped and inspired others to do the same.
