Legacy of Matthew C. Perry
Can the diplomatic strategy of the United States be affected by the possibility of the North Korean government, under the leadership of Kim Jong Un, systematically causing the death of millions of North Korean citizens? As Senior Enlisted leaders, it is of the upmost importance to keep the history, heritage, and traditions of the respective branches of service alive, and to share the relevance with all service members below, above and horizontal regardless of rank or position held. This paper will detail the history of the exploits of Commodore Matthew C. Perry in japan, explain the evolution of the relationship between Japan and the United States, and effects of Matthew C. Perry’s tenacious drive to secure trade routes with the Japanese had on the future of naval operations.
History
Commodore Matthew C. Perry attained much success as a Naval Officer, and received much distinction during his 50 years of service to the United States Navy. He began his career in 1794. He was educated in the ways of naval warfare, as a midshipman, during the Battle of Lake Erie under the tutelage of his older brother, Oliver Hazard Perry. As a lieutenant he fought the Barbary Pirates off the coast of Algeria, and was the driving force behind the sift from ships of sail to ships powered by steam, and is known as “the father of the steam Navy. As a Captain, he commanded the African Squadron which aimed to end African slave trade. During the Mexican War, he commanded the Home Squadron that fought against Veracruz. His reputation for upholding stern discipline and genuine concern for the wellbeing earned him the love and respect of his crew. This paper provided a brief history of Commodore Perry’s exploits in Japan, explained the evolution of the relationship between Japan and the United States, and effects of Commodore Perry’s tenacious drive to secure trade routes with the Japanese had on the future of naval operations. As Senior Enlisted leaders, it is of the upmost importance to keep the history, heritage, and traditions of the respective branches of service alive, and to share the relevance with all service members below, above and horizontal regardless of rank or position held. The alliance between the United States and Japan has, without question, been the cornerstone of peace and stability and prosperity across the Asia Pacific-Secretary of State John Kerry.
