Learning Style and Strategies Science and technology have made learning easier than in the past. People use technology such as YouTube and google to learn. Everyone has their unique style of learning. According to Romanelli et al. (2009) “ the definition of “learning styles” is “characteristic cognitive, effective, and psychosocial behaviors that serve as relatively stable indicators of how learners perceive, interact with, and respond to the learning environment” ( para. 3). These are four sensory approach of learning style. According to the VARK’s learning style, the individual’s learning style was visual 43%, kinesthetic 25%, aural 18%, and reading/writing 14%. Learning is multi-dimensional, there isn’t one specific way of learning. But, the primary learning style of this individual is visual learning style. “A visual learning style requires that you see what you want to learn” ("Houghton College," 2016, para. 1). Now a days educators use strategies based on research evidence to teach their students. “Awareness of individual learning styles among first year MBBS students and the use of an externally regulated strategy for enhancing learning helped students adapt to other learning strategies. This enhanced the use of better learning practices and, therefore, better learning outcomes” (Bhagat, Vyas, & Singh, 2015, para. 41). The teaching style has change from teacher centered learning to a student centered learning. Students who are aware of their learning strategy are found to be doing better in study because they were able to utilize their learning strategy and also other learning strategies. For an example- A visual learner was able to adapt to aural and kinesthetic learning strategy. Ultimately, it improved the learning outcome. Who would have ever thought taking a college course would require one to learn how to learn? It is a good concept we normally undergo at a very young age. At the pre-school age one will find children learning their strength and weakness through their playtime. As adults we almost forget we have to learn how to learn to continue growth in our workplace, school, and in life. In our second week of online classes I learned strengths and weakness in my learning style with the aid of learning assessments, personality spectrums, and time management logs. In this paper, I intend to describe the various components of my learning style and outline a plan to improve my time management and study skills.
For example, my preferred learning style is multimodal, which incorporates a little bit of all or some of the learning styles. On the other hand, my preferred learning strategies go hand in hand with my learning style. As a nursing student, it was a must to know my learning style and the strategies to use to be successful. Learning is defined as a permanent change in attitude or behaviour that occurs as a result of repeated experience (Sims & Sims, 1995). Understanding one’s learning style has many advantages as it can help one to identify the learning method or activities that can help to optimise the learning experience. It has been suggested that the importance of one’s learning style has been identified through studies and research on how one can maximise the potential for success and further learning development (Honey & Mumford, 2006). Learning styles are unique to each individual and are developed in childhood (Chase, 2001). We all have different personalities; therefore we all have preferred learning styles that suit us best. The way one learns depends on preference. Some learn by observing, listening and imitating others and draw conclusions from their experience. There are several factors that affect our learning style; for example, background, culture, religion and environment can have a major influence on one’s learning.
The previous was conducted through a questionnaire to determine the appropriate learning styles for themselves. The paper used a questionnaire of one of the most popular websites that determine the learning preferences for students (http://vark-learn.com/the-vark-questionnaire/ 8/3/2017), in this questionnaire the student can choose multiple responses in the same question when they see it suitable for them. Moreover, they can leave the answer blank if none fit them. To determine the best way I learn, I carried out two different learning styles questionnaires online. One may find that they are not always categorised in a specific type rather they may have more than one learning preference. Firstly, the most commonly used Neil Fleming’s VARK model. Fleming believes that there are four different types of learner: Visual, Auditory, Reading/writing and Kinesthetic learners. The second model I tried out was Soloman-Felder Learning Styles and Strategies.

There are three types of learning styles. They are: auditory, visual and kinesthetic. An auditory learner processes information by hearing and discussing the information. Visual learners process information through visuals such as charts, pictures, and other types of printed information. Kinesthetic learners process information by muscle movements and experiences that are hands-on. Through the assessment I have discovered that my strongest learning style is a visual style with a score of 13, followed by kinesthetic, 8, and lastly auditory with a score of 4. Based upon this, my strength is using a visual learning style. The things I do now in studying that are within the guidelines include: read the book chapters and highlight while reading, pay special attention to charts and diagrams shown in the book or in class. By reading and highlighting I have found I can quickly go back through the information and reread the important facts, helping me remember them better. The more times I go over the information, the more effective I am come test day. I have found it very easy to read charts and diagrams in textbooks. Generally, by being able to read certain charts, it is much easier and faster to comprehend the information than if I was to read the paragraphs about it. Most people have one preferred learning style and perform to a lesser standard when learning in a different style than what they’re used to. Nowadays, children are told to take a quiz in school to determine what their preferred learning style is, but after a few years, not many of these children remember what their preferred learning style is, or even if they do, they don’t apply it to their learning.
The ways people receive information may be divided into three categories, sometimes referred to as modalities: visual—sights, pictures, diagrams, symbols; auditory— sounds, words; kinesthetic—taste, touch, and smell (Richard M. Felder 2008). The visual mean of learning has no concrete or specific definition; it is simply the use of the eyes for effective study. For those who learn through visual means, they are called called visual learners and are most likely to retain information’s more effectively when it is presented to them in visual forms like charts, pictures or illustrations. They are mostly seated in areas with visual access or in front rows and they take notes to help them remember what they have seen. Individual or students with visual learning skills tend to stare or they find something to watch during their free period.
Learning styles are how individuals approach learning new concepts based on their strengths, weaknesses, and preferences. Acquiring and being aware of your learning styles is beneficial to accurately processing information that could be used for intellectual growth. Furthermore, learning styles are a part of how humans function and receive information from their world, so not being properly informed about this concept could bloom confusion, dysfunction, and chaos in society. Each learning style has a different goal and approach in interpreting information based on each individual’s abilities and should be regarded as being such. Methods like experiments, field trips or role play are rarely used. Because of that, labs and tutorials are more essential for these learners. Among the methods that can help these learners are by trying to use all the senses in the learning process because the more senses you use the higher recall will be, as you have many clues. In addition, make notes with several examples for each concept and use your own examples, the more personal examples you create, the better you remember. A very important thing to note is that this questionnaire is not designed to predict the ability of someone to make the diagnosis.
There are seven learning styles and techniques. The first kind of learner is a visual learner also known as a spatial, this is when someone prefers using pictures and images to understand a topic. The aural learner also known as the auditory-musical person, is a person who prefers using music or sound. There is the verbal learner or the linguistic person who prefers using words, both in speech and writing. Next is the physical learner also known as the kinesthetic learner, the preference of this learner would be using the body, hands, and sense of touch to learn. Following that would be the logical thinker or the mathematical person, who prefers using logic, reasoning and systems to learn. The social learner also known as the interpersonal learner is someone who prefers to learn in groups and with other people. This type of learning style can be great for student in the traditional classroom setting. Last there is the solitary learner or the intrapersonal person. This is someone who prefers to work alone and use self-study methods. This type of learner would best be fit in the online classroom setting. Thought out our lives, we are faced with many different learning experiences. Some of these experiences have made a better impact than others. This can be attributed to everyone’s different multiple intelligences or learning styles. A persons learning style is the method though which they gain information about their environment. As a teacher, it is our responsibility to know these styles, so we can reach each of our students and use all of the necessary methods.
