Anyone who works with, has, or has ever been around children knows how true the saying ‘children are like sponges’ is. Children are influenced by everything; parents, peers, teachers, and most importantly their home life. Influences from their environment can affect them positively and negatively, however if the child is affected negatively that does not mean the child cannot overcome that obstacle. Many people think how a child will turn out is based on their genes and biological make up or nature, however I believe that nurture is really what influences the way a child develops through-out their life. This topic is important because learning and understanding children and how the environment we let them grow up in will affect them. Would …show more content…
This documentary is about a child who grew up in a terrible home environment where she was neglected and sexually abused all before the age of one by her biological father. Then she and her younger brother were adopted by a minister and his wife, they took very good care of the children giving them a stimulating positive environment to grow up in, however the young girl was already too traumatized. The child would molest the younger brother, try to kill the younger brother by beating him, and would hide knives from the kitchen in her bed room to kill the parents in the middle of the night. This child suffered from Reactive attachment disorder, which means the child doesn’t know how to initiate or respond in appropriate ways socially and that they cannot make proper connections with other people. However after extensive therapy and supportive people and a positive environment around her the child grew up perfectly normal and is now a Registered nurse in a prenatal unit. I will use this case study example to show that the negative and bad early years had a negative effect on the girl’s childhood but when she was put into a good environment she was able to over some her past and the issues that came from it to go on to live a good …show more content…
I can pull this information from my class notes, textbooks, and quotes from my professors during lectures. This will be helpful because it will all be coming from sources who know what they are talking about and have a lot of knowledge on the topics. Some topics I would like to bring up would be Piaget, Brain Plasticity, Vygotsky, and Social Learning Theory. All these theories talk about and have proven in some way that the environment the child is in greatly influences the child’s development. Of course there are people who believe that nature is the way to determine how a child will turn out. They believe the genes the individual has is a precursor to how their life style will be. They believe that if your parents violent you are most likely to be violent. If you possess a certain gene sequence you are more likely to be aggressive. There are plenty of theories who support this notion of nature over nurture. However there are just as many examples out there to show how they are wrong that I will bring
The nature and nurture debate has been studied for many years. Years ago many people thought that human behavior was “instinctive, simply our nature” (Macionis, 2008). Are people born with a predetermined plot of what their life will hold? Many researchers have done numerous studies that have proven that human behavior comes from how a person was nurtured after birth. Biology and nature mean the same thing, and we are biologically programmed at birth to do certain things. For example, at birth a person’s heart beats on its own, and a baby knows how to suck instantly. This shows the nature side of humans. How a child was nurtured at birth has a direct bearing on his or her future.
Since the beginnings of psychology the debate of nature verses nurture has been going on. Certain psychologists take the position of the nature perspective. They argue that people are born with predispositions towards certain personalities, traits and other characteristics that help shape them into the people that they become later in life. Meanwhile multiple other psychologists argue the nurture perspective. They believe that people are born as a blank slate and their experiences over the course of life help shape their personalities, traits, and other characteristics.
"When my kids become wild and unruly, I use a nice, safe playpen. When they’re finished, I climb out.” – Erma Bombeck. Early childhood is the most rapid period of development in a human life. Although individual children develop at their own pace, all children progress through an identifiable sequence of physical, cognitive, and emotional growth and change. A child who is ready for school has a combination of positive characteristics: he or she is socially and emotionally healthy, confident and friendly; has good peer relationships; tackles challenging tasks and persists with them; has good language skills and communicates well; and listens to instructions and is attentive (World Bank 1). The interactive influences of genes and experience literally shape the architecture of the developing brain and the most important ingredient is the nature of a child’s engagement in the relationship with his or her parents (Bales 1). The parenting style of a mother or father has a strong and direct impact on the sequence of development through which the child progresses on the way to becoming a physically, mentally and emotionally healthy individual.
During the primary school years, children grow and learn in many different ways. Children not only grow physically but also develop in social context, emotionally/psychologically and cognitively. This resource basically converse the three dimensions of child development i.e. Social, Emotional and Cognitive.
To start examining these long-term affects, this article suggests that a committee be brought together with professionals of many different areas who work with the child and have observed their growth. Research should span across the child’s physical, mental, and behavioral health areas. Having professionals from many different disciplines allows for a wider expanse of knowledge of the development of a particular child. That child’s Pediatrician will be able to give information on the child’s physical health. The school-teacher would be able to provide information on the child’s social development. A psychologist would be able to provide information on the mental status of an abused child...
I believe that a child’s growth is developmental, and each child needs a secure caring and motivating atmosphere in which to grow and developed emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. I believe nature and nurture are the two aspects that influence in child development. Nature and nurture are different in several ways, but they both play an important role in child development. I believe that the environment that a person grows up in has the most influence on child development because children reflect what they are taught and what they learn from the people around them.
Throughout our lives we are influenced and taught by many. It can have an effect on the way we view problems and events within public boundaries. One of the most important and most effective influences children have in their lives comes from their families. The family can have both a positive and a negative influence on their lives. The family
The behavior of a child grows in a patterned manner just as the body. Like the physical growth, behavior too is strongly influenced by the home and other surroundings in which the child grows up. While we all have a lifetime to develop varying aspects of ourselves, it is the childhood period that is the most important in acquiring many tools. The strongest and the longest environment to affect the child are the parents. Most parents consider it their responsibility as well as the privilege to provide the best possible environment favorable to child's physical growth. However, often they tend to forget about the behavioral aspect in a child's development. The more a parent knows about the changes that take place in a child's behavior when he grows up, the more successful they can be in guiding the child along the complicated path leading to maturity. The attitude of the parents towards a child is what can make all the difference.
Undoubtedly, humans are unique and intricate creatures and their development is a complex process. It is this process that leads people to question, is a child’s development influenced by genetics or their environment? This long debate has been at the forefront of psychology for countless decades now and is better known as “Nature versus Nurture”. The continuous controversy over whether or not children develop their psychological attributes based on genetics (nature) or the way in which they have been raised (nurture) has occupied the minds of psychologists for years. Through thorough reading of experiments, studies, and discussions however, it is easy to be convinced that nurture does play a far more important in the development of a human than nature.
One of the most well-known debates in psychology is nature versus nurture. Nature is pre-determined traits, influenced by biological factors and genetics. Physical characteristics such as height, hair color, and eye color is all determined by the genetics we inherit. Nurture is the influence of environmental factors. Nature and nurture affects the physical, emotional, and social development of a child.
Childhood is a big influencer on how someone grows and changes in the process of becoming an adult. I know for a fact my childhood affected me greatly. It has led me to who I am today.
Nature vs nurture debate is an old argument, I believe that nature and nurture both work together. Your genes are something that you are born with but your experiences and how you were raised also make you the person you are today. Experiences and opportunities help you develop your personality. It also provides a valuable training ground for later life. Human culture, behavior, and personality are cause primarily by nature and nurture not nature or
Does environment really play a significant role in child development? Environment plays one of the most important roles in the development of a child. There are many ways that environment can play a role in developing in a child. What does it mean when we say “environment”? In this case, environment can be any place that children live in or spend time interacting in. The environment that a child is placed in while growing up will affect their physical, social, language, emotional, and cognitive development. The toll that certain environments place on a child can be damaging or beneficial depending on the atmosphere of the environment. Different environments such as the home environment,
The various aspects of child development encompass physical growth, emotional and psychological changes, and social adjustments. A great many determinants influence patterns of development and change.
