Learning About Human Resources

The purpose of this paper is to describe the role and functions of the legal and regulatory compliance. I will provide a synopsis of what I observed during the learning experience. In addition I will provide an analysis of their primary roles and functions as they relate to nursing and patient services. Also, I will provide insights I have gained into the leadership behaviors or style as a result of my observations. Finally I will summarize my learning experience by comparing my observations to sources from the literature that present evidence, best practices, or standards related to this specific role.

Description of the Role and Functions

Throughout these learning experiences in human resources I have identified that the legal and regulatory affairs as it relates to our health care organization are managed throughout HR as it relates to their specialty. The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) oversees and provides workers, employers, job seekers, and retirees with federal employment laws to protect their wages, health benefits, retirement security, employment rights, safety, and health of America’s workforce (United States Department of Labor, 2012b). There are many legal and regulatory laws that impact the way different roles of the human resources function; such as Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), American Disability Act (ADA), Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), and pension plans. During this past week I had the opportunity to meet with Elaine Copeland for a few hours. She is responsible for managing these legal and regulatory affairs.
