Another theory of leadership is the situational leadership theory. Schreuder, et al., (2013) Stated "According to the situational leadership theory, the choice of a task-oriented approach or a relationship-oriented approach not only depends on the situation, but also the readiness level of teams or employees" (p. 429). The readiness level of teams in the situational approach determines the leadership style the leader can utilize, the four styles discussed within this theory include; directing, coaching, supporting and delegating (Northouse, 2013, p. 101). The different leadership styles alternated in levels of directive and supportive measures.

One downfall of charismatic leadership may also be considered one of the strengths, followers do not question the visions or decisions of the leader (Michel et al., 2013; Northouse, 2013) When a leader is not questioned or challenged, they have more opportunity to make bad decisions due to the lack of input and perspectives of others. Charismatic leaders are aware of the effect they have on followers and can abuse their power (Michel et al., 2013). There isn 't necessarily a moral component in this form of leadership, which can sometimes allow the leaders to encourage negative behavior. There is little research that demonstrates the direct effect that charismatic leaders have on the emotions of their followers and there needs to be more research conducted on the different stress levels of followers (Michel et al., 2013; Oreg & Berson, 2015).
