The Leadership Styles of Mahatma Gandhi
Mahatma Gandhi (Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi) is known as a champion for the Indian people in their struggle for independence in the first half of the 20th century. Being an authoritative but not authoritarian leader, he is the one who brought the non-violent concept (Ahimsa) as his own feature of the leadership style (Charteris-Black, 2007, p. 66). According to Peter G. Northouse’s classification, Mahatma Gandhi’s leadership style belongs to a transformational supportive style (Northouse, 2012, p. 186). Generally speaking, transformational leadership style is the one, which changes and transforms people by using a set of influence techniques. The most obvious transformational, authentic, and servant leadership factors Gandhi possessed were as follows:
Charismatic character. By leading an extraordinary life, Gandhi was successful in gathering the Indian population and mobilizing them to fight for independence, without physically fighting. Though small in stature, Gandhi spoke with confidence and stood up for his beliefs. He was aware of all the injustices of his people and knew that the way he chose to personally deal with it would set the tone for how his followers did as well. Lots of world leaders were inspired by his activities despite the fact that he was thin, short and claimed himself to be “the ugliest man in the world” (Denning, 2011, para. 6). He embraced his flaws completely! After being assassinated in 1948, his personality was compared to those of Socrates, Buddha and even Jesus.

This father of a nation was a man of prayer and held his morals tightly. Thirdly, and globally – Mahatma Gandhi has become a role model not only in his native country but worldwide. His ideas, taken from the Hindi culture were based on generating political changes through the “force born of truth and love” and become revolutionary in the understanding of national and international policy making process (Denning, 2011, para. 2). Overall, Mahatma Gandhi’s contribution to the understanding of leadership is priceless and after almost 80 years since his assassination, his ideas are still appreciated and his phrases are still quoted. This fact is the best evidence of the Gandhi’s efficiency as a leader.
