Leadership has been defined as mobilizing the workforce towards training organizational goals (Yukl, 1998). The style of the leader is considered to be important in achieving organizational goals and therefore it is important to know your own leadership style as the leadership style will impact on the performance among subordinates (Berson et al., 2001). However this does not mean the leadership style alone will be responsible for all the performance of workers and attainment of goals.
Based on my characteristics, values and beliefs, my leadership style would be close to the democratic leadership. According to Akapala (1990), this form of leadership is said to be the earliest among the leadership styles. Democratic leadership is found as a leadership approach that considers others in the decision-making. In this form of leadership, the value and positivity exists towards the subordinates (Igbaekemen, 2014). Furthermore, this type of leadership promotes motivation, moral standards, and high performance in many different ways. Democratic leader will be opened and considers opinion of everyone. This leadership believes sharing teams’ skills and talent will improve performance and therefore, everyone’s involvement will enhance productivity. However, because of the inclusive nature, the decisions may be delayed as everyone’s opinion and thoughts are collected. I believe that I as a leader will seek for everyone’s involvements and contribution to the team. It is important to do so, in order to discover all individuals’ potential skills and talents and to produce synergy of the group. After recruitment, I will conduct orientation of volunteers where the program have been laid out systematically which include a tour of the facilities, introducing to the staff members, providing them with important information such as the policies and assessments, train them and provide run-sheet of the program in order to let the volunteers run smoothly and under control.
