Health care management is the profession that provides leadership and direction to organizations that deliver personal health services and to divisions, departments, units, or services within those organizations (Buchbinder & Shanks, 2017, p. 2). Health care managers are crucial in terms of the development and running of a health care organization. With this said, health care managers have a variety of leadership styles available to them and it is important that when using these styles that they use them to their advantage in order to maintain positive outcomes. There are three main types of leadership style: democratic leadership, pacesetting leadership, and coaching style leadership. Although there are several types of leadership styles, after taking the leadership style quiz offered by Kendra Cherry a psychology expert I have now learned that my leadership style is democratic leadership.
First off, democratic leadership is a type of leadership in which members of the group take a more participative role in the decision-making process (Cherry, 2016). This leadership style allows members of the group to give feedback and allows everyone to make decisions (Buchbinder & Shanks, 2017, p. 32). Within a democratic leadership style all members of the group are given equal opportunity although the lead of the group is there to offer guidance (Cherry, 2016). In addition, there are many benefits of using a democratic leadership style such as: group members are encouraged to share their thoughts, this style leads to higher productivity, and more commitment to projects (Cherry, 2016). All things considered, not only have I learned my personal leadership style but I have also learned how to effectively use my leadership style along with other leadership styles. As a leader it is important to be flexible and to be able to adapt to your surroundings. In the future each group of individuals I work with will require various things from me as a leader and with the knowledge of each leadership style I now have the capacity to adapt to each group adequately. This information will allow me to be more successful in my career down the road because I will not only have the knowledge of various leadership styles but I also know when and how to use them in order to become an effective leader.
