While all leaders have a predominant or at least a preferred style leadership style, great leaders will utilize a variety of leadership styles depending on the circumstances as well as the people being led. In this paper I will analyze my own preferred leadership style and discuss how it is utilized most effectively.
The Participative Leadership Style
In order to begin my leadership analysis I took the test “How to find out your style of leadership” at the University of Kent UK’s website (careers and employability service, 2011) this was a 50 question test to provide the user what their leadersip style most resembles. I discovered in my results that my prodominent style of leadership is as a participative leader, charactiristics of the participate style are those where the leader regularly involves her members by building consensus through participation, asking their teams opinions and using them to make decisions, they will also keep their team informed of progress and changes along the way.
The participative leadership style is best when orginizational flexability and when a sense of individual responsibility are needed as well as when team work is needed, this tends to be projects where quality is more important than speed or producttivity as this style take more time in gathering input as opposed to simply giving orders or goals to reach.
Although the participative style was rated at my most prominent, I did also score relativly high in all of the other styles, this shows an ability to be flexable and utilize the varrious styles if needed.

... may of the comparrisons the participative style out-performed the goal-oriented leadership style in the US markets. Another article (Foundation, 2015) talks of desiging systems to nurture the leadership potential of every employee, which is the key to creating high-performance teams.
Being in the business world for many years myself, this is a stark difference to where businesses were fifteen or twenty years ago, there for I believe this style is going to be much more of a necessity going forward.
Although I recognize the importance of the participative style in engaging and empowering employees, I also acknowledge it is not always the most appropriate leadership style. In order to be a truly great leader you must embody the ability to utilize all leadership styles, given the circumstances and the various employees you are leading.
