1. Which of the six styles above do you tend to employ? Which are the most comfortable for you?
I think I take on each of the six leadership styles in different situations. But, if I had to pick one style that I find myself employing more than any other, I would choose Democratic. I do not like conflict and try to avoid it at all costs. I think having a Democratic leadership style helps to prevent conflict because it ensures that everyone is heard, and thus, everyone can be made content to a certain extent. Like the book says, I like to include other people in the decision-making process if the outcome of the decision includes them because I think that it is only fair that they have a say in what is affects them. I also think having everyone share their opinions could lead to better ideas. I like to find the compromises of situations and the Democratic leadership style allows for that.
The Democratic style of leadership would be most comfortable for me, but I would also feel comfortable with Coaching (I have been the coach of my town’s swim team for the past three summers so am used to this method of leadership). I think in certain instances I also feel comfortable in taking on the leadership style of Commanding, like when I am in charge of the newsroom at The Signal and

I knew that in order for the group to be successful and have order, one of the members had to take charge so that members stayed organized and handed in assignments on time. I made an outline of what each member should concentrate on during the project. This step made for a much smoother project because we were all able to focus on different aspects/become experts on our own topics, which led to a successful outcome. However, because I was the person who took initiative, the other group members then relied on me to do a bulk of the work for everything else for which we were supposed to collaborate, which is
Visionary leadership qualities help their project teams understand the true objectives and goals, as well as, how their contributions are important to achieve these goals (Preston, Moon, Simon, & Kossi, 2015). This very statement makes the visionary leadership style my number one go to style and my most beloved way of leading. To take a vision and to be able to correctly motivate and inspire your team with each individual contribution to get a job done and to further your project to the next level is amazing to me. Visionary will be the style I strive to work toward as a future leader. My number two style would be the Democratic style, mainly because Democratic leaders bring individuals together in order for everyone to give their thoughts, ask questions, and be involved in the entire project and its processes (Preston, et al, 2015). Getting teammates involved in all aspects of the project gives them a sense of
Exemplary leaders have a profound and positive influence on the commitment and performance of their followers. In order to achieve and sustain success exemplary leaders have to effectively communicate a clear vision, cultivate a team environment and establish cooperative goals. Coach Boone displayed several actions and behaviors that represent The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership.
When looking at the three traditional styles of leadership of authoritarian, democratic, and laissez-faire; I believe that I generally fall in to the category of democratic. In breaking down leadership further into theories, I hold the leadership behaviors which are that of the Interactional Leader.
How do senior leaders set your organization’s vision and values? The organizations vision and values are implemented through daily reinforcement of our objectives, therefore establishing guidelines in which to follow with reference to agency policies and directives. Through mentoring and daily interaction, senior leadership reinforce the agency goals and future commitments. Communication is a key factor in establishing the agency’s vision, therefore providing a guideline to achieving future aspirations. In order to effectively address current and future requirements that are essential in capturing the vision, senior leadership convey the agencies vision and values with our stakeholders through conferences, committee meetings and everyday
To think one style of leadership is the only style seems rather pompous. You have several different types and brands of blood pressure pills to lower the blood pressure depending on the cause, therefore why would we think we only need one type of leader. At times I am needed to make a decision that I do not ask for outside participation. For example the attendance policy. I decided what would be a fair policy, how many points would be assigned for each call off and how long each point would stay active for. The situation did not need a meeting, it did not need input for others. I utilized a laisse fair style when the nurses were complaining about medication pass times. I simply gave them the task to develop a standardized medication time and let me know. When I hold a risk meeting I have several nurses and other disciplines present to assist at problem solving risk behaviors and that also means trying new techniques. Every situation is different and it is my responsibility, as the leader, to know which style would work best in each situation; sometimes it also depends on the people involved. Some staff need a leader to stand back more, others need one to effectively manage them. So not only do I have to know the situation, I also need to be sensitive to the persons involved, why it is important for me to know the staff I work
There tend to be a variety of concepts regarding how, as well as what should undergo consideration when developing leadership in individuals. Scholars have different suggestions on the kind of approaches that should get observed during the practice. As a result, this paper seeks to unravel various forms of leadership approaches, as well as suggesting the best theory that should be in use when creating a perfect leader. Additionally, the work will establish ways of determining the effectiveness of a leadership program.
The main component of an organization is people. A team of people work together to achieve the common goal of the organization. For an organization to operate successfully it must have a vision, policies, procedures and governance. Each of these four items are determined, implemented and overseen by the leaders of the organization. Leadership is an important part of each phase of an organization beginning with the start of the organization and continuing until the disbanding of the organization. Since leadership of an organization has a strong impact on every organization it is often researched in the study of organizational behavior (OB) (Kreitner & Kinick, 2014).
Collaborative leadership is my preferred leadership style. This is because I believe that if everyone contributes and equal participation is encouraged then great things can be achieved. As the cliché saying goes, two heads are better than one. However, an issue I found with collaborative leadership is that not everyone contributes and there is a risk that one person will dominate and not allow others to participate. Often the loudest and opinionated members will contribute while the quieter individuals will generally not contribute, especially if they are not with their friends.
Democratic leadership style is somewhat of a melting pot of various leadership styles and theories. One can often flow easily between leadership styles when necessary and the ability to do so more than reflects an oftentimes successfully run organization.
Educational leadership is an ever-changing fast-paced profession where decisions are made continuously in the best interest of children. “In this era of accountability, final decisions are expected to reside with the person who is the top of the hierarchy” (Shapiro & Gross, 2013, p. 4). It is with these decisions that educational leaders affect the lives of hundreds of young people and their families’ every day. Ethically, educators are faced with daily dilemmas to balance personal beliefs and professional standards. Educational law is sometimes at fault for unjust or irrational rules that negatively affect some students. However, educational leadership provides strong direction in attempt to provide all students with a caring,
My biggest personal leadership failure occurred earlier this year when I worked at Einstein Bros Bagels at Coffman Union. I stayed there from January until April making and serving bagels to customers. However, I had the morning shift, the busiest period of the day. Long lines would form every time I was there, and sometimes I couldn’t catch up. One day in April, my co-worker, a veteran making bagels, was absent, and someone who didn’t have as much experience replaced her. What followed was a mess. My team chemistry with the replacement was dreadful, and a ton of people had to wait a while for their orders. My manager saw the incident, and after my shift was over, he gave me the option of leaving my job. I accepted, but my self-confidence was in a state that was beyond repair. It was one of the first times that I felt I let others down with my work performance. I learned that I shouldn’t expect to be great at everything and that I should analyze my weaknesses before taking on something challenging.
That being said, reading through the posts of my peers this week, I noticed that like me, most of my peers have managers or other leaders utilizing the democratic style of leadership. While a few peers have leaders using both the democratic and authoritarian leadership style together, very few peers owned up to the
Based on my characteristics, values and beliefs, my leadership style would be close to the democratic leadership. According to Akapala (1990), this form of leadership is said to be the earliest among
Democratic leader is vital for a forward movement in this organization. The Autocratic Leadership Style is where the subordinates are told what to do a how to carry out these specific task when the style is used employees tends to work from fear and they never perform to their ability. The democratic style will help the company to move forward by allowing the employees the opportunity to be a part of decision making process for improvement.
There are a few different types of well known leadership styles, authoritarian, delegative, and democratic. To assess my leadership style I used two online tests to help me determine my style. I felt the results were accurate and I fall into a democratic style/participative style. If I am leading I prefer to include the group and get their feedback on solving issues. However, I still make the final decision after listening to the thoughts of the group on a particular topic. This is considered to be a positive style of leadership that is inspiring to the group involved. The leaders decision making tends to be more accurate due to the input of other experts. (Cite)
