Abstract The meaning of leadership and the styles and concepts it takes to be an effective leader. A great leader is one who influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal. There are three major types of leader styles; Democratic which is the type to include their group members. The autocratic, which is the type to pretty much, are bossy. And lastly the Laissez-Faire, which one pretty much does their own thing and guides them to hopefully finishing the task. With all the different leadership styles come the six characteristics that help build ideal leaders no matter what style is used. These leaders are also known as participative leaders, this style is usually one of the most effective and leads to higher productivity, and tends to increase group moral (Northouse, 2012). Some characteristics of this leadership are: they encourage members to share ideas, opinion, even though leaders have final say. This helps members feel more engaged in the process and creativity is encouraged and rewarded (Leadership , 2004). There are many characteristics that the Democratic leaders posses however with characteristics there comes benefit and downfalls. First benefit is since there is involvement of the decisions and problem solving from the members of the team Democratic leaders can better ideas and can come up with more creative solutions. This way the team is more likely to be committed, and involved with the projects that are assigned. John F Kennedy is a charismatic leader and quite frankly one of the most popular however Dwight D Eisenhower is a political figure, and a republican nonetheless but he was the best Democratic leader as a Military Leader. He would face difficult tasks of getting alliances to agree on a common strategy. He also worked hard to make sure everyone worked together to come to an understanding. The two of them knew how to work their charm and get there way in order to accomplish what needed to be done (Leadership , 2004). An autocratic leader would be Martha Stewart; she built her empire with personal attention to every detail. She is very meticulous and demanding to get what she wants done. Some say she is very successful do to her demanding leadership role wanting everything done precisely and perfectly. Another autocratic leader is Howell Raines; he was the executive editor of the New York Times 2001 to 2003. And was known as a hard charging editor.
