Leadership Style Self-Assessment
You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink is a proverb I have heard since I was young. Leadership is the skill of influencing people to accomplish goals (Huber, 2014). In today’s world with policy and technological changes the leaders must use their leadership skills to not only get the horse to the water, have him drink, but also do it with a smile an invite others to join him. Leaders use a variety of styles to accomplish their goals. I will discuss the leadership style that I utilize most often, how my style relates to leadership theories and the work type environment it is most useful in.
Democratic Style
Every leader has a certain leadership style that dominates their workplace, but a successful leader often has to uses all three leadership styles at different times. The three types of leadership styles are: the authoritarian which keeps close control over followers and makes all decisions; the democratic leader which promotes relationships and sharing of ideas; and the laissez-faire which is most often viewed as a “hands-off” approach and the leader delegates the tasks and gives little to no direction (Malos, 2012).
The leadership style I utilize will have to directly influence my team members’ execution and performance as well as motivates my team to reach my organization goals (Ojokuku, Odetayo, & Sajuyigbe, 2012). Although I do appear to use all three forms of the leadership styles, the style I am most comfortable with and utilize the most is the democratic or participative style. My rationale is simple, I believe when people feel like they are important and heard, they will try harder. I spend great effort trying to get to know my staff on a personal level...

It is important that each patient is looked at holistically and we ensure we have looked at all possible aspects to increase the quality of care. Through a multi-disciplinary approach we can reduce the risk and increase the quality of life for each person.
It is imperative to note that actions and behaviors of a successful leader are based on accurate self-assessment and assessment of the situation. Every group and every situation may render the leader to utilize a different form of leadership style. Although I prefer one style over the others and may utilize one more, does not mean the others are not utilized. I often use all three leadership styles in the same day and even the same hour. Healthcare changes every day and it is the leader’s responsibility to change as well to ensure positive outcomes.
