The leader whom I had a privilege to interview works for a reputed financial company and also volunteers in the NYC assembly man office. His leadership style is characterized by inspiring and leading people, creating values and long-range perspectives, developing new ideas and focusing on society. Leader has vision and values that might be beneficial in the long run, and manager is concentrated on the efficiency of a particular task in short period of time. One of the most applicable models that facilitated me in defining this person leadership style is the model of transformational leader. Such leaderships cause change in individual and society, as well as creates valuable and positive transformation. Transformational Leadership starts with the development of a vision, a view of the future that will excite and convert potential followers. Once the vision is developed, it has to be constantly conveyed to the people who would be willing to support such vision. Therefore, such leader is full of enthusiasm and energy. In addition to selling the ideas to others, transformational leader either knows the way in order to succeed or he has to explore and create the right strategy. The reason why he wanted to volunteer there is hurricane Sandy that severely damaged his community in Brooklyn. Having a good financial education from Baruch College, he understood that government would provide the financial support to those communities who would be able to rich out and sick for help. His main purpose was to rebuild the Local Park in the area where he lived. He was able to bring more people, organize their work, obtain finances from the government and build the park in his community. Hi invited his team members for chats and encouraged them to talk about vision, purpose, and aspirations rather than discussed their daily tasks. The transformational leadership model can definitely help to explain the factors required for such change and contribution to the community. First factor is openness to experience; this leader was open to new ideas and thus was more likely to stimulate the others intellectually. Second, conscientiousness of this leader was achievement oriented, with clearly defined goals and expectations. As a result, hi motivated his followers to achieve organizational goals and defined outcomes. Third factor that contributed to the change is culture. Across the globe, there are CEO’s, managers, and several other individual’s in leadership-type roles that have the expectation of making their company successful in the eyes of the investors, the employees, and the customers that they serve. This may be measured by a company’s gross profitability, employee engagement or overall customer satisfaction. Most companies have leadership models and strategies in place that leaders are expected to use in order to drive the expectations of the company while maintaining consistency across the business. In an effort to examine various types of leadership styles, I have conducted interviews with two individuals that are or have been previously tasked with leading their teams and their company towards success.
This model has been used over decades in research to chime in on the importance of knowing the behavior of leader’s and their effect on those who work for them. Transformational leadership describes a leader moving followers beyond immediate self-interests through idealized influence (charisma), inspiration motivation, intellectual stimulation, or individualized consideration. Transformational leaders are change agents. They influence the mission and objectives to make way for a brighter future for the organization. Followers are motivated to do more than is originally expected because of their feelings of trust and respect for the leader.
According to (Burns), “transformational leadership can be seen when "leaders and followers make each other to advance to a higher level of moral and motivation." the strength of the vision, transformational leaders are get followers to get their expectations, and motivations to work and achive their goals.
Transformational leadership can be defined as causing a change in individual and social system. Besides, transformational leaders usually connect follower’s aspirational with the organizational goal and persuade the followers to achieve the organizational goals to satisfy themselves (Tauber, 2012).
Simola et al. (2012) defined transformational leadership as a “type of leadership in which interactions between interested parties are organized around a collective purpose in such a way that transform, motivate, and enhance the actions and ethical aspirations of followers”. Transformational leaders are seen as very successful at motivating and inspiring a group of individuals or followers to have an increased desire to achieve and attain a particular vision [1] 1. All of this requires a leader with “vision, self confidence, and inner strength to argue successfully for what is popular or is acceptable according to established wisdom of the time” [1, p.17] 1. In this respect, Wael have ensured at the beginning of his role in Omran to interact with all the employees in order to get a clear vision about the way forward of Omran future in a very inspired and motivated speech and behaviors.
Leaders with transformational leadership behavior can direct their organization toward effectiveness and productivity (Hur, 2011). Leaders can direct human resources toward the strategic objectives of the organization and ensure that organizational functions are in line with the external environment (Riaz&Haider, 2010). Furthermore, capabilities of effective leaders are predicting the future probabilities and planning strategies to satisfy uncertainties (Riaz&Haider, 2010). They can lead and supervise organizations to success by paying attention to changes especially environmental changes, which helps them set suitable goals and objectives.
According to Yoder-Wise (2015), a leader can be defined as, “an individual who works with others to develop a clear vision of the preferred future and to make that vision happen” (p 35). As employees, we often have our own ideal of a good leader, which may be influenced by experiences and perception of workplace norms. While one’s opinion of an effective leader may vary, there are several recognized leadership theories. The following will focus on the transformational leadership approach.
Presently many of us have learned that managers are primarily administrators who have learned to write business plans, utilize their resources and keep track of progress. We must learn that we are not limited by job title, and that means we can utilize our management skills in any position that we are in. We must also know that we can use our leadership skills in the same situations. On the other hand we have also learned that leaders are people who have an impact on those that surround them. The main difference that separates these two roles is that management is a function that must be utilized in any type of business, and leadership is the relationship that the leader has with his followers, which in turn can motivate and energize the organization.
In my search for the meaning of transformational leadership outside of coursework, I found multiple definitions of this title. There happened to be one that I enjoyed reading most because it embodied the full significance of what a transformational leader is. Business dictionary (n.d.) specified that, “Transformational leader is a style of leadership in which the leader identifies the needed change, creates a vision to guide the change through inspiration, and executes the change with the commitment of the members of the group”. Transformational leadership is one of the most popular leadership styles. According to Kendrick (2011), “Transformational leadership involves four factors: 1. idealized influence, 2. inspirational motivation, 3. intellectual stimulation, and 4. individual consideration.” These four factors make transformational leadership have an impact on followers.
