I have the ability to adapt to the situation. One of my first leadership roles included people that were new to the department. So I took on a directing style of leadership by being very specific in tasking and expectations. I gave them specific tasks to complete, explained what needed to be done, how it should be done and when I expected it to be completed. I did not give them any room for deviation from the task to be completed. According to Daft (2014), “The directing style is a highly dictating style and involves giving explicit directions about how tasks should be accomplished”.
Due to various levels of individual skill levels, Wang (2001) noted that a good leader will adapt the style of leadership that best fits the subordinate’s level to achieve the desired goals. I experienced another opportunity to lead a team of just 4 on a project that lasted for only one year. That particular project included 4 people that were already well versed in their roles and understanding of the project. So in this particular instance, I adapted an entrusting style of leadership for that period of time until the project was completed. There was no need for me to give specific daily direction and explanations of tasks, they would be only irritated with me because they already knew what to do and when to do it. So by allowing them room for making decisions and establishing their daily routines, the project went along with only a few minor problems.
Several researchers discovered that rather than a likeable leader with enthusiastic followers, good leadership requires an understanding of the situation and an appropriate response. (McCleskey, 2014; Graeff, 1997; Grint, 2011). Both my examples above...

When it comes to being a better motivator, I need to always show respect to subordinates. By adding respect to my leadership style, this will improve motivation and follower willingness. By becoming a better listener to others concerns, this will improve the environment and increase self-confidence in others. I can specifically accomplish this by once again writing this out beforehand on how I can accomplish this endeavor before speaking and acting. Once this becomes a habit, then I will also begin doing this on the fly when talking with others on the team, it will essentially become part of my decision making process, whether I have time to write it down or talk through it as I go if necessary.
