Carson Dye describes leadership as “a living phenomenon”; and that “it is expected to shift shape according to its purpose and the demands of its followers and the environment. It is as a social influence process in which the leader seeks the voluntary participation of subordinates in an effort to reach organizational goals”. (Dye, 2010) According to Dye, Leadership is both inherent and learned. Studies have indicated that leadership skills and traits are the results of heredity. Those who are not born leaders must cultivate these values to enhance their leadership capabilities. (Dye, 2010)
Gardner describes leadership as, the process of persuasion or example by which an individual (or leadership team) induces a group to pursue objectives held by the leader or shared by the leader and his or her followers. (Gardner, 1990) Gardner suggests that, “most of the ingredients of leadership can be taught. The notion that all the attributes of a leader are innate is demonstrably false. Most of the capabilities that enable an outstanding leader to lead are learned”. (Gardner, 1990)

Different management styles are suited for different situations. For example, a transactional leader is best suited for minimum wage jobs because of their quick actions to small details.
On the other hand, transformational leaders are more effective with CEO’s or sales managers. (Ingram, 2015) According to Gardner, transactional leadership accepts and works within the structure as it is. Transformational leadership renews. (Gardner, 1990) Both Transformational and Transactional leadership styles are needed for guiding an organization to success. However, in order to instill an effective style of leadership within an organization, transformational style of leadership would be optimal.
