As a follower I have had the opportunity to experience a leader with some of the traits, skills and styles that are to be mentioned. My professional leader has shown his self-confidence Northhouse (2013, p.24)) states that “self-confidence is the ability to be certain about one’s competence and skills”. My general manager believes in himself and his knowledge for the auto industry, after years of working his way from bottom to the top he seems to know how the business is ran and he has seen the company at its low and high times with him as a leader. His experience has made him a better leader especially when addressing this sales team. Intelligence is not something that my general manager is strong at, as he has no higher education, but he has spent his life learning the business so he understands the nature of the business. As leaders you must have certain skill that enable your followers respect you and want to be part of your vision, you must also exhibit some traits that will enable your followers believe in you, without these characteristics one cannot be a leader as there is a thin line between leadership and management.
As a leader my traits, style and skills are still in the development stage in my career. There are some areas that are already developed and some that require more attention for instance my intelligence level is not where I want it to be. I currently give my staff the opportunity to grow and develop themselves within my business as well as empowering them.
