The guiding coalition must cultivate the personnel in these vital network positions and the critical influencers in the organization as change agents. The guiding coalition must also develop support for the proposed change initiatives if the implementation is going to be successful (Cameron & Green, 2012). Planning and preparation are significant leadership functions in any change initiative. The establishment of an effective guiding coalition or team is a pivotal first step in this change process. This team must identify the long-term vision and short-term goals of the organization and how the changes move the organization toward that vision. The team must also determine the driving forces and resisting forces present along with winning key stakeholders and planning for the effective use of change agents and networks. Once an adequate “road map” is developed, the guiding coalition can begin the actual implementation of the change process.

Implementing Change
Once the leadership identifies a need for change, has diagnosed the particular change items, and has taken proper preparation measures, the guiding coalition can effectively implement the change initiative. The success of the implementation process is affected heavily by the level of preparation effort put forth by the organization. Kotter (2007) highlighted the importance of forming a guiding coalition in the success of any transformational effort. This guiding coalition needs to evaluate the progress of the change initiative throughout implementation and adjust accordingly to prevent a stop in the change progress (Kotter, 2007). The important role of leadership and change agents cannot be understated in the success of the organizational initiatives. Using effective change management principles can allow the MSP Aviation Command to better reach the organization’s goals and fulfill its mission. The process of identifying a need for change, diagnosing what needs to be changed, preparing for the change, implementing the change, and sustaining the change is an efficient method for the MSP Aviation Command to achieve the highest levels of success and efficiency for employees, stakeholders, and the public.
