In this essay, it is analyzed the leadership that a leader has. The leader that is analyzed is an Children’s Social Worker from Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), and currently hold the position of a Dependency Investigator. She is a Latina and also a Mobile worker. The analysis will be derived from the interactions that I have had with her, as well as the comments I have heard from previous interns and current employees, who are her co-workers. The interactions I have had with her are mostly during supervision, which is once a week, and email contact. She has been an employee of the county for five years and graduated with a Master of Social Work from University of Southern California. Her name is (has been changed) Danielle.
There are various traits that contribute to a leadership process. According to Northouse these are the six key leadership traits: intelligence, confidence, charisma, determination, sociability, and integrity (2012). There are other traits that are important, but for the purpose of this analysis, only these six will be used.
The leader has displayed that she has intelligence. She has very good and eloquent language skills. Since one of Danielle’s duties as a Dependency Investigator is to write court reports, she has a very dominant court language that she uses when she also speaks. When she first started with DCFS, she was a continuing services social worker. After 2 years of experience with continuing services, she interviewed when a position as a Dependency Investigator became available. ...ne is the same. Also as mentioned before, in her unit she does not have a cooperative relationship. Other co-workers dislike her, for reasons that I am unaware. And it is of concern since it is a small unit and they all seem to get along. Moreover, she tends to misuse dome of her power and authority. She needs to learn of ways to manage and supervise others without having to threaten them and also, with being humble of her position.
In regards to emotional intelligence, Danielle needs to improve her her self-management in the way of how she says things that exert power and authority. In the area of sociability, she does have minor challenges with getting along with others, but this can be due to minor things and other people not having control of their emotions/character. Overall, Danielle does a great job as a leader, but she needs to become a bit more democratic.
